How this site is funded
Plainly, without the legal-sounding hedging. Reel & Rig earns commission when you buy through a link here, and it costs you nothing extra.
The short version
Reel & Rig is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
In plain English: if you click a buy link on this site and then buy something, the retailer pays us a small percentage. You pay exactly the same price you would have paid going there directly. That is the entire business model.
How the links actually work
Every buy link on this site goes through /go/<merchant> on our own domain first, which then forwards you to the retailer. Two reasons, both worth knowing:
- It lets us count clicks. Amazon cannot tell us which page a click came from, so this is the only way we can see which pages are useful to readers.
- It keeps links maintainable. If a retailer relationship changes, one config entry changes and every link on the site follows. No content is rewritten.
Those links carry rel="sponsored nofollow noopener" and open in a new tab. They are excluded from our sitemap and blocked in robots.txt, because they are not content.
Which retailers we earn from
Amazon is the only retailer we currently have an affiliate relationship with. Where a page mentions another retailer or a brand’s own store, that link earns us nothing, and we say so rather than implying otherwise.
| Retailer | Status | Do we earn? |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Affiliate partner | Yes |
| Tackle Warehouse | Reference link only | No |
| Bass Pro Shops | Not joined — plain link | No |
| Cabela's | Not joined — plain link | No |
| Garmin | Reference link only | No |
| Humminbird | Reference link only | No |
| Shimano | Reference link only | No |
That table is generated directly from the site’s own link configuration, so it cannot drift out of date with what the links actually do.
What commission does not change
This is the part that matters, and the part most disclosure pages skip.
Commission influences exactly one thing: which retailers we are able to link to. It does not influence:
- Which products we recommend, or in what order. Picks come from published specifications, and several pages recommend the cheaper option over the more expensive one.
- What we write about them. Every pick carries a required drawback and every roundup names something we would skip.
- Whether we tell you not to buy something. Several pages on this site actively recommend spending less, or buying a combo instead of separate components, or not buying a category of product at all.
No manufacturer or retailer has reviewed, approved or paid for anything here. There are no sponsored posts, no paid placements, and nothing on this site was provided free by a brand.
About the prices you see
Prices are pulled from the retailer and stamped with the date they were checked. If a price is older than 48 hours, it disappears and the button reads “Check price on Amazon” instead.
We would rather show you no number than a stale one. Prices move constantly and a wrong price is worse than an absent one, so the final price is always the one on the retailer’s own page at checkout.
Reviews and testimonials
There are none on this site, anywhere. No user reviews, no testimonials, no star ratings, no “as recommended by” badges.
That is a deliberate consequence of not having tested this gear: any rating we published would be invented, so we publish none. It is also why the site emits no review structured data.
What we do not do with your data
Clicking a buy link passes you to the retailer with a tracking parameter that tells them we referred you. We do not receive your name, your email, your payment details, or what you bought — only aggregate commission totals.
