Editorial policy

1. Sourcing

Every specification published on Reel & Rig was read off a manufacturer or retailer page and carries the URL it came from, visible on the page where the figure is used.

Ranked by preference:

1. The manufacturer’s own specification page. Preferred, because it is the primary source.
2. A major retailer’s published spec table. Often more complete and more accessible than the manufacturer’s own site, and used extensively here.
3. Nothing. If neither publishes a figure, we say so.

We do not source specifications from other review sites, forums, marketplace listings, or memory. A number without a citable publisher does not go on the page.

2. What we do not publish

• Testing claims. We have not tested this gear, and no page will imply that we handled it, fished it, or evaluated it on the water.
• Estimated specifications. If a maker does not publish a figure, that cell stays empty and the absence is noted.
• Fabricated reviews or testimonials. There are no user reviews, testimonials or ratings anywhere on this site. Any that appeared would be invented, which is why none exist.
• Prices in body copy. Prices render only from the live data layer. There is no price field in the content files, so a hardcoded number is structurally impossible.
• Review or rating structured data. No Review, reviewRating or aggregateRating markup, because that asserts an evaluation we did not perform.
• Credentials the author does not hold. No certifications, no tenure claims, no expert framing.

3. How picks are chosen

A product may only be recommended if we can publish its full specification table with a source URL. That constraint eliminates a lot of otherwise reasonable products and makes several of our roundups shorter than a competitor’s.

That is deliberate. A four-item list where every entry is verifiable is more useful than a ten-item list where six entries have no citable specifications.

Every pick carries a required drawback. A product with nothing written against it has not been assessed, and every roundup names at least one thing we would skip.

4. Prices

Prices come from the retailer through a live data layer, with a hard freshness gate of 48 hours. Beyond that the number is suppressed and every buy button falls back to “Check price on Amazon.”

Every displayed price is stamped with the date it was checked. We would rather show you no number than an old one.

5. Imagery

Product photography comes only from the retailer data layer. Where no photo exists for a specific model, the page shows a labeled placeholder rather than a similar-looking stock image — a generic photograph beside a named product implies it depicts that product.

Ambient and section photography is licensed stock, credited on the image credits page. No stock image is ever presented as the author, as our own equipment, or as evidence of anything.

6. Editorial independence

Reel & Rig earns affiliate commission when a reader buys through a link. That funding model has exactly one permitted influence on the site: which retailers we can link to.

It has no influence on:

• Which products are recommended, or in what order
• What is written about them, including the drawbacks
• Whether a page tells you a cheaper option is the better buy
• Whether we recommend not buying something at all

No manufacturer or retailer has reviewed, approved or paid for any content here. There are no sponsored placements and no paid reviews. If that ever changes, this page changes first and the disclosure will be on the affected page.

7. Corrections

Every figure on this site has a source link beside it, which makes the site checkable. That only means something if errors get fixed.

If you find a number that does not match its source, or a source that has changed, email info@reelandrig.com. We will verify against the published source, correct the page, and update its modified date.

Where a correction changes a recommendation rather than a detail, we note the change on the page rather than editing silently.

8. Updates

Prices refresh automatically. Specifications are re-checked against their sources when a page is substantively revised, and every page displays the date it was last updated.

A page that has not been updated recently has not been quietly changed either. We would rather show you a truthful older date than an artificially refreshed one.

9. Authorship

All content is written by Sawyer V., framed as an enthusiast rather than an expert because that is what is true. There is no editorial staff, no expert panel, and no reviewer. Claiming any of those would be inventing an organization.

10. Safety

Where content touches safety — ice thickness, boat electrical work, wading — we state general guidance and say plainly that local conditions and local knowledge override it. No piece of gear on this site is worth an avoidable risk.
