Gear ratio explained, and why inches per turn matters more

The number everyone quotes, and the number that actually describes what happens when you turn the handle.

The short answer

Gear ratio is how many times the spool or rotor turns per handle turn. It is a trade, not a score: higher recovers line faster and gives up cranking torque. It also does not tell you retrieve speed on its own, because spool diameter matters as much. Compare inches per turn when a maker publishes it.

What the number means

A 5.2:1 ratio means the rotor turns 5.2 times for every full turn of the handle. That is all it says.

What it does not say is how much line that recovers, because the amount of line picked up per rotor turn depends on how big around the spool is. A wide spool wraps more line per revolution than a narrow one at exactly the same ratio.

The comparison that proves it

Read the top three rows first. Identical gear ratio, and recovery ranges from 22.4 to 31.6 inches — a 41% difference driven entirely by spool size.

Then read the last two. The Daiwa has the lower ratio (5.6:1 against 6.8:1) and the higher recovery (33.2 in against 28). Anyone shopping on ratio alone would have concluded the opposite.

Higher is not better, it is different

Gears trade speed against torque, in reels exactly as in bicycles. A higher ratio moves more line per handle turn and gives you less mechanical advantage doing it.

For a beginner, the lower end is genuinely a feature. The most common mistake with a new crankbait or spinnerbait is fishing it too fast, and a 5.2:1 reel makes that mistake harder to commit.

Spinning and casting ratios are not comparable

A common confusion worth clearing up. On a spinning reel the ratio describes rotor turns; on a baitcaster it describes spool turns. Those are different mechanisms with different spool geometries.

That is why baitcasters routinely carry higher-sounding ratios — the Abu Garcia Max5 X is 6.8:1 — without a proportional advantage in line recovery. Compare inches per turn across the two types, never the ratio.

How much does this actually matter?

Honestly: less than most spec discussions suggest, and less than line choice or drag smoothness.

Anything in the 5:1 to 6.5:1 range fishes almost every freshwater technique acceptably. You can slow a fast reel down by cranking slower; you cannot make a slow reel fast, but the situations that genuinely need speed — catching up to a fish swimming at the boat, burning a bait through a school — are a small fraction of most people’s fishing.

If you are choosing between two reels and one has a slightly better ratio for your technique, take it. If you are paying more for the ratio alone, do not.

What does gear ratio mean on a fishing reel?

How many times the rotor or spool turns for one full turn of the handle. A 5.2:1 reel turns its rotor 5.2 times per handle turn. It does not tell you retrieve speed on its own, because spool diameter matters as much.

Is a higher gear ratio better?
