Dry boxes and cases: what actually has to stay dry
A tackle box keeps lures tidy. A dry box keeps the things you cannot replace on the water.

The short answer
A dry box is a hard case with a rubber gasket and latches. It is not a tackle box, and a tackle box is not a substitute for it. Phone, keys, wallet, spare hooks and a first-aid kit go in the dry box. Lures go in StowAways. Buy one case small enough that you never leave it behind.

What a gasket does that a latch does not
An ordinary tackle box closes. A dry box seals. The difference is a continuous rubber gasket in the lid that compresses against the rim when the latches close, so there is no path from outside to inside.
That matters because water on a boat or a kayak does not arrive from above. It arrives as spray off the bow, as drips off your forearms, as a puddle in the bottom of the hull that slides around when you move. A box that merely closes will let all three in over the course of a day.
It is worth being clear about the limit as well. A gasketed case protects against submersion for as long as the gasket holds and the latches stay shut. Left open on the deck when the kayak goes over, it protects nothing at all, and the discipline of closing it every time is the actual feature.
What goes in it
Your phone. It is your map, your camera and your way of calling for help. Our kayak safety page treats it as safety equipment rather than a convenience, and that is the right framing.
Keys and wallet. Losing a car key at a launch is a much worse day than losing a rod.
Spare hooks, swivels and jig heads. Small steel items are the ones that rust fastest, and a rusted hook point is a hook that will not hold. Our line and lure storage page covers what damp does to terminal tackle over a season.
A small first-aid kit. Specifically for hook removal and cuts from fins and gill plates.
Spare leader material. Fluorocarbon does not mind water, but a spool that has been rolling around in a wet bag picks up grit that damages guides.
Sizing it, which is where people go wrong
The instinct is to buy the biggest case that fits the hatch. That is backwards. A dry box only works if it is closed, and a big one is a box you leave open because you are always getting something out of it.
Buy the smallest case that holds a phone, keys, wallet and a small first-aid kit, and keep everything you touch repeatedly — lures, pliers, line — outside it. Then it can stay latched all day.
Two cases beats one big one for the same reason: a phone-sized case that lives on your person, and a larger one strapped into the hull for the things you only need in an emergency.
Dry box, dry bag, or a zip-lock
Hard dry box. Crush protection as well as water protection. The right choice for a phone and for anything with a screen or a hinge.
Roll-top dry bag. Better for clothing and bulk, useless for crush protection, and it takes up no space when empty. The right choice for a spare fleece.
A zip-lock bag. Genuinely better than nothing, and genuinely not a solution. It fails at the seal after a few openings and it offers no protection when you kneel on it.
If you want to look at the category, gasketed cases sit here: waterproof dry boxes and cases on Amazon, and roll-top bags here: roll-top dry bags on Amazon.
Why we are not naming a specific case
Because this site puts a named product in front of you only when the maker publishes enough to check the recommendation — dimensions, materials, construction. Most dry cases are sold on a photograph and a claim, with no published gasket material, no ingress rating and no internal dimensions.
The published test for water ingress is an IP rating, and a case that states one has told you something real. If you are choosing between cases, that is the number to look for and the one honest shortcut on the whole shelf.
What we can point at with published specifications is the tackle storage that sits alongside it, which is what the block below covers. Neither of those boxes is published as waterproof, and neither is a substitute for a gasketed case.
The rest of the wet-weather problem
A dry box solves the small things. It does not solve you. Our rain gear page covers the other half, and our fishing backpacks page covers the bag that all of this lives in — including the honest limits of a water-resistant fabric.
So what do I actually buy?
The dry case itself is a category buy rather than a named pick, for the reason above. What we can publish specifications for is the tackle storage that goes in the same bag — neither of these is waterproof, and both are the right home for things that do not mind getting damp.

Questions people actually ask
What is the difference between a dry box and a tackle box?
A dry box has a continuous rubber gasket in the lid that compresses when the latches close, so nothing gets in. A tackle box merely closes, and will let spray, drips and hull water in over a day.
What size dry box should I buy?
The smallest that holds a phone, keys, wallet and a small first-aid kit. A big case ends up staying open because you are always reaching into it, and an open dry box protects nothing.
Is a dry bag or a dry box better for fishing?
A hard box for anything with a screen or a hinge, because it adds crush protection. A roll-top bag for clothing and bulk, because it packs down to nothing when empty. Many people carry both.
How do I know a case is actually waterproof?
Look for a published IP rating. A case that states one has told you something measurable; a case that only says 'waterproof' in the description has not.
