Ice fishing electronics: flashers, sonar and what actually changes
Ice is where sonar makes the biggest difference of any freshwater fishing, because you can watch a fish decide.

The short answer
On ice you fish a single vertical column, so a screen stops being a search tool and becomes a feedback tool. You see your lure, you see a fish rise to it, and you change what you are doing based on how it reacts. A flasher shows that in real time on a circular dial; a conventional graph shows it scrolling, with a small lag.

Why sonar matters more on ice than anywhere else
In open water, sonar is a search tool. You drive, you look for structure and fish, and you go back and cast at what you found. There is a gap between seeing and fishing.
On ice there is no gap. You are directly above your lure with the transducer pointed straight down the same hole. You see the lure on the screen. You see a fish come to it. You see the fish follow it up, or turn away, or sit two feet below watching.
That closes the feedback loop completely. You jig, watch the reaction, and change the jigging immediately. It is a genuinely different way of fishing, and it is the reason ice anglers treat electronics as essential rather than optional.
What a flasher does that a graph does not
A flasher displays returns on a circular dial as colored bands at the depth they came from, in real time, with essentially no processing delay. Your lure is one mark, the bottom is another, and a fish is a third mark that moves.
A conventional graph draws the same information as a scrolling history. That history is genuinely useful in open water — it is how you read structure passing beneath a moving boat — and on ice it is mostly noise, because nothing is passing beneath you.
The practical difference is latency and reading. A flasher updates instantaneously and reads as position; a graph updates with a small delay and reads as history. For watching a fish react to a jig, instantaneous position is what you want.
Worth noting: Garmin’s STRIKER 4 publishes a built-in flasher mode, so a conventional unit can present a flasher-style display. That is a real crossover and it is why a dedicated flasher is not the only option.

GPS deserves a specific mention. Under snow, a frozen lake is a featureless white plain with no landmarks. A waypoint on a rock pile is the difference between drilling five holes and drilling twenty-five.
The cold-battery problem, which is real
Lead-acid batteries deliver noticeably less than their rated capacity below freezing. A 7 Ah pack that runs a 615 mA unit for about eleven hours in summer will do meaningfully less at ten degrees.
Two mitigations, neither expensive. Keep the battery inside an insulated bag or in the bottom of a bucket with your gear on top of it, which keeps it far warmer than ambient. Or use lithium, which handles cold considerably better and weighs less — a genuine advantage when you are dragging a sled.
Transducer handling on ice
Two things that catch people out.
It has to hang level. A transducer at an angle points its cone at an angle, and you will be reading water two feet to the side of your lure. Purpose-made floats hold it flat; without one, people improvise with a foam block and get it wrong.
The cable freezes. A wet cable pulled out of a hole at ten degrees becomes a stiff spiral, and repeatedly bending a frozen cable is how the conductor inside breaks. Coil it loosely and warm it before forcing it.
Do you need it?
For ice, more than for any other freshwater fishing — and still not on your first trip.
Go once with a rod and a bucket. If you enjoy it, electronics are the single largest upgrade available and they will change how you fish more than any rod would. If you find sitting on a frozen lake unpleasant, you have learned that cheaply.
