Fly

The best fly fishing combos: one box, and the line is already on it

Four things have to match before a fly rod casts at all. An outfit is someone else doing that for you.

By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

Orvis Clearwater Fly Rod Outfit (9 ft 5-weight)

The short answer

Buy a 9 ft 5-weight outfit. The Orvis Clearwater outfit publishes rod, reel, line and backing together with a 25-year rod guarantee; the rod alone publishes 3.5 oz in four pieces. The outfit exists because a mismatched line ruins a good rod, and matching is the part beginners get wrong.

Why fly gear has to be matched

On spinning tackle the lure has the weight and the line just connects you to it. In fly fishing the fly weighs almost nothing and the line is the weight you cast.

That inverts everything. The rod is built to load under a specific line weight, and a line two sizes off will either fail to bend the rod at all or overload it into a hinge. Neither feels like a technique problem — it feels like you cannot cast.

Backing, leader and tippet then have to follow. That is four components that all have to agree before the first cast, which is exactly why outfits exist and why they are the right first purchase.

What weight, and what length

Line weights against water
WeightForTypical length
3 wtSmall streams, small trout, dry flies7 ft 6 in to 8 ft
5 wtThe general answer — trout everywhere9 ft
6 wtWind, bigger streamers, bass on a fly9 ft
8 wtPike on a fly, big flies, heavy wind9 ft

Nine feet at 5-weight is the first fly rod for almost everyone, for one reason: it is the setup with the most water it can fish acceptably. Specialist rods are better at one thing and worse at everything else.

What an outfit does not include

Leader and tippet. The tapered monofilament between the fly line and the fly. Most outfits include neither, and you cannot fish without a leader.

Flies. Obviously, and our trout flies page covers the short list that actually matters.

Nippers and forceps. You trim tippet and unhook fish constantly, and doing both with your teeth and your fingers gets old within an hour.

A net. Our fly nets page covers why rubber mesh is a fish-welfare item rather than a preference.

The small stuff is here if you want to add it in one go: leaders, tippet and fly tools on Amazon.

Combo or separates, honestly

Buy the outfit if this is your first fly rod. The matching is done, the line is spooled, and the money you would spend learning which line to buy is better spent on a casting lesson.

Buy separates if you already own a reel you like, if you need a specific line for your water — a sink tip, a specialist nymph line — or if you are replacing a broken rod.

Our combo against separates page makes the general argument for spinning gear, and fly fishing pushes the answer further toward the combo because there are more components that have to agree.

The first hour

Fly casting is a timing skill, not a strength skill, and the single most common beginner error is trying to throw the fly rather than letting the line load the rod.

Our fly beginner page covers the starter list, and our fly line page covers what the taper is doing while you cast.

So what do I actually buy?

The outfit if it is your first. The rod alone only if you already have a reel and a line you are happy with.

The picks, in full

Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.

1. Best fly fishing combo

Orvis Clearwater Fly Rod Outfit (9 ft 5-weight)

Orvis

9 ft 5-weight rod with reel, fly line and backing already matched and spooled, plus a rod tube and a 25-year guarantee.

The published contents are the product: rod, reel, fly line and backing. That sounds mundane and it is the entire argument — a fly rod with the wrong line on it casts badly, and a beginner has no way to tell whether the rod or the line or their own stroke is at fault.

9 ft 5-weight is the most useful single fly setup there is. It throws a dry fly on a small river, a nymph rig on a bigger one, and a small streamer on a stillwater. Our fly rod weights page explains why the number is a line weight rather than a rod weight.

Chrome snake guides with a ceramic stripping guide insert and a full black nickel aluminum reel seat are published. An aluminum reel seat on an entry outfit is a real specification — it is the part that corrodes and loosens on cheaper rods.

The published 25-year guarantee is unusual at this level and it matters on a four-piece rod, because four-piece rods break at the ferrules and in car doors.

The drawback

Orvis does not publish a separate reel specification table for the outfit — no reel weight, no drag figure, no published backing capacity — so the reel is the one component you are buying blind. The included line is a general-purpose line rather than one chosen for your water. And an outfit is a package deal: if you already own a reel, you are paying for a second one.

2. Best if you already own a reel

Orvis Clearwater Fly Rod (9 ft 5-weight, 4-piece)

Orvis

The same 9 ft 5-weight blank alone: 3.5 oz, four pieces, model 905-4, with the rod tube and the 25-year guarantee.

3.5 oz is published for the rod on its own, which is the figure the outfit does not give you. On a rod you false-cast for hours, weight is what your shoulder notices.

Four pieces is the right call on a fly rod, and it is not the compromise it is on a spinning rod. Fly blanks are thin and flexible and the ferrules sit where the blank is already stiff, so the penalty is small and the portability is large.

Buying the rod alone makes sense in exactly one situation: you already have a reel and line you like. Then you are paying only for the piece you are actually upgrading.

If you do not, add our fly line page and fly reels page to the reading list before you buy, because the matching is not optional.

The drawback

On its own it is not fishable. A fly rod with no line is an expensive stick, and by the time you have added a reel, a line, backing and a leader you will usually have spent more than the outfit costs. For a first purchase this is the wrong choice almost every time.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best fly fishing combo for a beginner?

A 9 ft 5-weight outfit that ships with the reel, line and backing already matched and spooled. It is the most versatile single fly setup and it removes the component-matching problem entirely.

Is a fly fishing outfit better than buying separately?

For a first setup, yes. Four components have to agree before a fly rod casts properly, and an outfit is someone else having done that. Buy separates only if you already own a reel or need a specialist line.

What does a fly fishing outfit not include?

Usually the leader and tippet, flies, nippers, forceps and a net. The leader is not optional — you physically cannot attach a fly to a fly line without one.

What weight fly rod should I buy first?

A 5-weight. It covers dry flies on small rivers, nymph rigs on bigger water and small streamers on lakes. Lighter and heavier rods are better at one thing and worse at everything else.
