Fly
The best fly line for a beginner: weight-forward, floating, and match the rod
The line is the weight you cast. Get it wrong and the rod is not the problem, however good it is.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
Weight-forward, floating, in exactly the weight printed on the rod. The RIO Mainstream Trout publishes 80 ft total with a 36 ft head; the Scientific Anglers Air Cel publishes 80 ft total with a 40 ft head. A short, heavy head loads the rod quickly, which is exactly what a beginner needs.

Three words on the box, and what each means
Fly line is labeled with a code like WF-5-F. It is three separate decisions and you only need one answer for each.
WF — weight forward. The weight is concentrated in the front section. It loads the rod quickly and casts further with less skill. The alternative, DT or double taper, has an even profile and rolls out more delicately, and it is a second line rather than a first.
5 — the line weight. This must match the number printed above the grip on the rod. It is not a preference. Our fly rod weights page explains why.
F — floating. The line sits on the surface. Floating line does 90% of trout fishing, it is the only sensible first line, and it is far easier to pick up off the water and recast than a sinking line.
Head length, and why shorter is easier
| Line | Total | Head | Sizes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RIO Mainstream Trout WF | 80 ft | 36 ft | 3-8 |
| SA Air Cel WF | 80 ft | 40 ft | 4-9 |
Beyond the head is the running line — thin, light, and there to shoot through the guides on a long cast. While you are learning you will almost never get past the head, and that is fine.
Which is why the head length is the beginner-relevant figure. A 36 ft head is out of the tip sooner than a 40 ft one, so the rod tells you it is loaded earlier in the cast.
Overlining, and when to do it deliberately
Some casters put a line one size heavier than the rod’s rating on it — a 6-weight line on a 5-weight rod. It loads the rod harder and at shorter range, which can make a stiff rod much easier to feel.
It is a legitimate trick and it is not a beginner trick. Learn what a correctly lined rod feels like first, or you will have no reference for whether anything is working.
Backing, leader and the rest of the string
A fly line is only 80 ft. Behind it goes backing — thin braided line that fills the reel and gives you something in reserve if a fish runs past the fly line.
In front goes the leader, a tapered monofilament section that transfers energy from the thick line down to the fly, and then tippet, the thin final section you replace as you change flies.
Neither line here includes either. You can pick both up alongside: fly backing, leaders and tippet on Amazon.
Looking after it
Fly line is the component most damaged by neglect. PVC coating cracks from ultraviolet light, from being left coiled tight in heat, and from grit ground into it on a bank.
Wipe it down with a damp cloth occasionally, do not leave the reel on a dashboard, and replace it when it starts sinking where it used to float. A cracked line casts badly and no rod makes up for it.
Our fly line page covers the taper profiles in more depth, and our fly combos page covers the outfits that arrive already lined.
So what do I actually buy?
Weight-forward, floating, in the rod’s own weight. After that, take the shorter head if you are learning and the welded loop if you would rather not tie one.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best beginner fly line
RIO Mainstream Trout WF Floating Fly Line
RIO
80 ft total with a 36 ft head, sizes 3 to 8, published with a short powerful front taper in lemon green.
The published 36 ft head against an 80 ft total is the number that matters for a beginner. The head is the thick, weighted section that loads the rod, and a shorter head means it is out of the tip guide sooner — so the rod loads with less line in the air.
Less line in the air is the whole game when you are learning. Every extra foot is more timing to get right, and a line that loads at 25 ft is far more forgiving than one that needs 45.
RIO publishes the taper as a short, powerful front taper for turnover. Turnover is whether the leader and fly straighten out at the end of the cast or land in a heap on top of each other, and it is the difference between a presentation and a splash.
Lemon green is published and it is a functional choice rather than a cosmetic one. A highly visible line lets you see where your line is on the water and, more importantly, lets someone teaching you see what your cast is doing.
The drawback
RIO publishes the head weight only for the 3-weight — 120 gr at 30 ft — and no figures for the other sizes, so you cannot check whether a given size runs true to standard or half a size heavy. The product page states no core or coating specification either, and one published review notes the line lacks a welded loop at the tag end, which means tying your own backing connection.

2. Best for the widest range of rods
Scientific Anglers Air Cel WF Floating Fly Line
Scientific Anglers
80 ft total with a published 40 ft head across every size, WF-4-F to WF-9-F, with a welded front loop.
A published 40 ft head that is the same across every size is unusual and genuinely useful. It means the line behaves consistently whichever weight you buy, so a 5-weight and an 8-weight of the same line feel related.
The welded front loop is the practical advantage over the RIO. A welded loop is a neat, strong loop formed in the line itself, and it means attaching a leader is a loop-to-loop connection rather than a knot you have to learn first.
A braided multifilament core under a PVC coating is published. A braided core is suppler than a monofilament one, which matters in cold water where stiff line holds coils.
There is a raised bump marking published at the point where the head ends, so you can feel through your fingers where to begin the cast. On a beginner line that is a teaching aid built into the product.
The drawback
A 40 ft head is longer than the RIO's 36, which means marginally more line has to be outside the tip before the rod loads — the wrong direction for a complete beginner. Scientific Anglers does not publish head weights at all for this line, so there is no way to check it against the rod's rating. And PVC-coated lines crack with age and sun exposure whether you fish them or not.

Questions people actually ask
What fly line should a beginner buy?
A weight-forward floating line in exactly the weight printed on the rod, written as WF-5-F for a 5-weight. Weight-forward loads the rod quickly and floating line covers almost all trout fishing.
What does the head length of a fly line mean?
The head is the thick weighted front section that loads the rod. A shorter head — 36 ft rather than 40 — is out of the tip guide sooner, so the rod loads with less line in the air. That is easier to learn on.
Does the fly line weight have to match the rod?
Yes. The line is the weight you are casting, and the rod is built to bend under one specific weight. A line two sizes off will either not load the rod at all or overload it into a hinge.
What is a welded loop on a fly line?
A loop formed in the line itself at the factory, so you attach a leader loop-to-loop instead of tying a knot. The Air Cel publishes one at the front; the RIO Mainstream is reported not to have one at the tag end.
