The best tackle bags: why a bag beats a box on foot
The same tackle, carried in a way that leaves your hands for the rod and the bank.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
A tackle bag holds the same 3700-footprint utility boxes as a hard case, on a shoulder strap that leaves both hands free. For bank fishing that is the deciding difference. A hard box still wins in a boat, where it gets stood on and rained into.

Bag or box: it depends where you stand
| Soft bag | Hard box | |
|---|---|---|
| Carrying on foot | Shoulder strap, hands free | One hand occupied |
| Water resistance | Poor - fabric wicks | Good |
| Crush resistance | None | Good |
| External pockets | Yes - tools stay reachable | Rarely |
| In a boat | Gets wet and stood on | Designed for it |
| Packs into odd spaces | Yes - it deforms | No |
The split is clean. On foot, buy the bag. Hands free is worth more than water resistance when you are climbing a bank with a rod in one hand.
In a boat, buy the box — or a bag that lives in a dry hatch. Our boat and kayak storage page covers the afloat case, where keeping things dry and secured beats carrying comfort.
What to check before buying
How many 3700 boxes it takes, and whether it comes with any. Bags are advertised by capacity in boxes, and some include them while others do not. That changes the real price substantially.
The strap and its attachment points. A loaded tackle bag is heavy, and the strap anchors are where bags fail. Wide padded straps and stitched-through anchors, not rivets into thin fabric.
Whether the base is reinforced. The bag will spend its life set down on gravel, concrete and boat decks.
Zip quality. Zips are the second failure point after straps, and a corroded main zip ends the bag.
External pockets that actually fit tools. A pocket too small for pliers is decoration.
How to load one
Sort the boxes by technique rather than by lure type, which is the argument our organizing page makes at length. Then a bank session is one or two boxes chosen for the water rather than the whole bag.
Keep terminal tackle in a small-compartment box and soft plastics in their bags — loose plastics leak plasticizer that attacks hard bait finishes, as our storage page covers.
Put tools in the external pockets and nothing else. The point of an external pocket is that you can reach it without stopping.
The backpack variation
Backpack-style tackle bags exist and they solve a real problem: a shoulder bag on a long walk pulls on one side, while a backpack distributes the load.
Worth it if you hike to water. Not worth it for short walks, because a backpack has to come off your back to open, which a shoulder bag does not — and on a bank where you are moving every ten minutes, as our bank fishing page recommends, that adds up.
Care, which is what makes it last
Empty it and open it after every trip. Fabric holds moisture, and trapped moisture rusts hooks inside closed boxes.
Rinse salt or silt out of the base. Grit in fabric grinds at the weave.
Do not store it loaded in a hot car. Heat plus soft plastics is how bags end up permanently smelling of plasticizer.
A few silica gel packs in the boxes cost almost nothing and address most of the moisture problem.
So what do I actually buy?
Buy the bag if you fish on foot and the boxes to fill it. Standardizing on one footprint is the whole benefit.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best tackle bag
Plano Guide Series 3700XL Tackle Bag
Plano
A shoulder bag sized for 3700-footprint boxes, with external pockets.
Sized for the 3700 footprint, which is the standardization that makes the whole system work: the same boxes fit this bag, boat hatches, kayak crates and rack systems, as our organizing page explains.
The shoulder strap is the actual feature. On a bank session you are climbing down banks, pushing through brush and carrying a rod, and a bag on your shoulder leaves both hands available in a way a hard box carried by a handle never does.
External pockets take the things you reach for constantly — pliers, line, a spare spool — without opening the main compartment. Our bank fishing page makes the case for keeping tools accessible.
The drawback
Fabric is not waterproof and it is not crush-proof: set it down in the wet and water wicks in, and anything fragile inside is protected only by its own box. Plano does not publish an empty weight or a consistent denier rating across the range, which makes durability comparisons within their own line harder than it should be.

2. Best box to put in it
Plano Guide Series Two-Tier StowAway 3700
Plano
14 x 9 x 2.75 in with 13 to 45 compartments — the 3700 footprint itself.
Published at 14 × 9 × 2.75 in with thirteen to forty-five compartments. That is the footprint the bag is built around, and buying several identical boxes is what makes a bag system work.
The two-tier design doubles capacity in the same footprint, which matters when a bag takes a fixed number of boxes.
The adjustable compartment count is the useful part. Set it to thirteen large compartments for crankbaits, or forty-five small ones for terminal tackle, in the same box.
The drawback
Two tiers means reaching past the top layer to get at the bottom one, which is genuinely annoying with wet hands on a bank. The latches are also the weak point on any utility box, and a box that pops open inside a bag redistributes your entire tackle collection.

Questions people actually ask
Is a tackle bag better than a tackle box?
On foot, yes — the shoulder strap leaves both hands free for the rod and for climbing banks. In a boat a hard box is better, because it resists water and being stood on, which fabric does not.
What should you look for in a tackle bag?
How many 3700 boxes it takes and whether any are included, wide padded straps with stitched-through anchors, a reinforced base, good zips, and external pockets that actually fit pliers.
What size boxes fit a tackle bag?
3700-footprint boxes, roughly 14 by 9 inches. That is the size the industry standardized on, so the same boxes fit bags, boat hatches, kayak crates and rack systems.
Is a backpack tackle bag worth it?
If you hike to water, yes — it distributes the load instead of pulling on one shoulder. For short walks a shoulder bag is better, because a backpack has to come off to open and bank fishing means moving often.
