Fish finders for bank and shore fishing: what actually works
The honest version: a conventional fish finder cannot work from shore, and the category that can is one we have no spec sheet for.

The short answer
A transom-mount fish finder cannot work from the bank, because the transducer has to be in the water and moving. What works from shore is castable sonar: a float you cast out on a heavy rod that reads the water beneath itself and sends it to your phone. It is a genuinely different product with genuinely different limits.

What follows is how the category actually works, what it can and cannot do, and how to decide whether it is worth your money. When we can document specific units properly, this page will get picks.
Why a boat unit will not work
The transducer has to be submerged and it has to move relative to the bottom. That is not a limitation of any particular unit — it is how sonar imaging works.
A sonar picture is built up over time. The unit pings, records what came back, draws one vertical line of pixels, and repeats. The horizontal axis on your screen is time, not distance. When the boat moves at a steady speed, time maps to distance and you get a profile of the bottom.
Hold the transducer still and every ping returns the same thing. The screen fills with flat horizontal lines. That is why a stationary boat over a fish shows a straight line rather than an arch.
From the bank you cannot move the transducer at all, so a conventional unit gives you essentially nothing. People do try lowering a transom transducer on a rope from a dock; it reads depth directly beneath and nothing else.
What castable sonar actually is
A floating ball, roughly tennis-ball sized, with a transducer in its underside and a transmitter inside. You tie it to a heavy line, cast it, and it reads the water beneath itself and sends the return to a phone app over Wi-Fi.
Reel it back slowly and the float moves, which gives you the movement that makes a profile possible. What you get is a strip of bottom along your retrieve path.
The good versions include GPS and can build a contour map of a small water body over several casts, which is genuinely useful on a farm pond.

The rod problem nobody mentions
A castable sonar unit weighs several ounces. That is far outside the lure rating of a normal spinning rod — a rod rated 1/4–5/8 oz is being asked to throw something three to six times its top rating.
You need a dedicated heavy rod, or at minimum a medium-heavy rated to 3/4 oz or above, and you should treat casting it as a lob rather than a cast. People do break rods doing this, and then blame the sonar.
Budget for a second rod, or use the heavy combo you already own for catfish.
Is it worth it?
The honest answer depends entirely on whether you fish the same water repeatedly.
If you fish one or two shorelines regularly: probably yes, once. Spend an afternoon mapping the depth and structure in front of your usual spots, learn where the drop-off is, and you have permanently improved your fishing. You may barely use it after that, which is fine.
If you fish somewhere new every time: less compelling. Scanning a new bank takes time you could spend fishing, and reading water — wind direction, points, inflows, weed lines — gets you most of the same information faster.
If you are choosing between castable sonar and a better rod: buy the rod. Casting distance from the bank is a bigger limitation than not knowing the depth.
The free version of most of this
Before spending anything, note that a lot of what castable sonar tells you is available for nothing.
Tie a 1 oz weight on and count it down: roughly a foot per second of sink is a workable approximation for a compact sinker. Cast to different spots, count, and you have a depth map. Drag it back slowly and you feel bottom composition through the rod — gravel ticks, mud is mushy, weed grabs.
That technique costs a dollar and teaches you more about reading water than a screen does.
So what do I actually buy?

What we can recommend honestly is the alternative the page argues for: if you are choosing between castable sonar and a better rod, buy the rod. Casting distance is a bigger limitation from the bank than not knowing the depth.
