Ice

A $30 ice combo against a $70 ice rod: what the jump actually buys

One arrives ready to fish for thirty dollars. The other is a rod only, costs more than twice as much, and publishes the one figure that matters.

Berkley Cherrywood HD Ice Spinning Combo (24 in Ultra Light)

The short answer

The Cherrywood HD combo publishes a 24 in ultralight solid-glass rod, a size 20 reel at 4.4:1, 2–4 lb line rating and pre-spooled line. The Tickle Stick publishes 23 in, a PC2 composite blank and a 1/64–1/16 oz lure rating. The combo is complete. The rod is sensitive. Only one of them tells you what jig it casts.

What you are actually comparing

This is not a like-for-like comparison and it is worth saying so before the table. One of these is a complete fishing outfit and the other is a component.

Each publishes the rating the other omits. Berkley gives you a line rating and no lure rating; 13 Fishing gives you a lure rating and no line rating. There is no way to compare them on a single number, so the comparison has to be about what kind of fishing each is for.

The real price gap is larger than it looks

The rod costs a little over twice the combo. But the combo includes a reel and line, so to fish the Tickle Stick you add both.

An inline or small spinning reel and a spool of ice line is a real additional cost. Our ice reels page covers the inline-against-spinning decision and our ice line page covers what to put on it. Budget for both before deciding the gap is small.

Put the other way round: for the price of the Tickle Stick alone you could own the complete combo and still have money toward an auger, which our auger page will tell you is the purchase that actually decides whether you go.

Solid glass against composite, and what it costs you

Solid glass is tough, slow, and damps vibration. Composite with parallel linear fibers is designed to do the opposite — to load progressively and transmit changes in load.

In open water, damping is often a virtue: it keeps a treble hook pinned and forgives a hard hookset. Vertically through a hole, with two feet of rod and a 1/64 oz jig, there is nothing to forgive and everything to feel.

This is the single strongest argument for the dedicated rod, and it is the reason experienced ice anglers own rods rather than combos. It is also the argument that means least to somebody on their first trip, who will catch fish on either and learn more from going than from gear.

A published lure rating is worth more than it sounds

Most winter panfish jigs weigh between 1/64 and 1/16 oz. The Tickle Stick publishes exactly that window. The Cherrywood publishes nothing.

A rod rated to 1/64 oz will load on a jig that light, which means you can cast it, control it, and feel it stop. A blank not built for it simply does not respond — the jig hangs there and the rod tells you nothing until a fish has already moved off with it.

It is the same argument our ultralight rods page makes for open water, and on ice it is sharper because the lures are lighter still.

Which one, honestly

The combo if this is your first ice season, if you need a second rod for a friend, or if you want something you can leave rigged in the truck all winter without worrying about it. It fishes. Nobody was ever kept off the ice by a glass blank.

The Tickle Stick if you already know you like ice fishing, you target crappie and bluegill, and you have noticed yourself missing bites. The published 1/64 oz rating is the specific fix for that specific problem.

Buy the auger first if you own neither. That is not a dodge — a rod you cannot get a hole for is a decoration, and our beginners list puts things in the order that actually gets you fishing.

So what do I actually buy?

The combo is a complete outfit for a first season. The rod is a sensitivity upgrade that needs a reel and line on top. Price the whole setup before you compare them.

The picks, in full

Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.

1. Best complete first setup

Berkley Cherrywood HD Ice Spinning Combo (24 in Ultra Light)

Berkley

24 in ultralight solid glass, moderate fast, 2-4 lb, size 20 reel at 4.4:1, pre-spooled.

Pre-spooled is the specification doing the most work here. It arrives with line on it and fishes the day you open it, which removes the step that stops more beginners than any other. Our ice beginners page puts a working rod ahead of a good rod for exactly this reason.

The reel publishes 130 yd of 4 lb, 110 yd of 6 lb and 75 yd of 8 lb at a 4.4:1 ratio. That is far more line than ice fishing needs, which is fine — you are fishing straight down in water that is rarely more than 30 ft.

Solid glass is published, and on ice it has one real virtue: it survives. Cold makes graphite brittle, rods get stood on, trodden on and closed in shelter doors, and a glass blank tolerates all of it.

Full cork handle and stainless guides with inserts are published. Cork stays warmer to hold than a bare blank, which matters more at 10 deg than any spec sheet suggests.

The drawback

Solid glass is the least sensitive blank material in common use, and ice fishing is the discipline where sensitivity counts most. Berkley publishes no lure rating for it, so you cannot check whether it loads on a micro jig. The 4.4:1 reel publishes no retrieve-per-turn figure and no maximum drag. And the moderate fast action on a glass blank means a very light bite may simply not register.

2. Best for feeling the bite

13 Fishing Tickle Stick Gen 3 (23 in Ultra Light)

13 Fishing

23 in ultra light, PC2 flat-tip composite, published 1/64-1/16 oz, ALPS thin-wire guides, Hi-Vis tip.

1/64–1/16 oz published is the reason this rod exists. It is the only rod on this page that tells you what it will cast, and 1/64 oz is genuinely tiny — the weight class most winter panfish jigs actually sit in.

The PC2 flat-tip blank uses parallel composite linear fibers, which is a published construction rather than a marketing word: the fibers run along the blank so it loads progressively and reports load changes rather than damping them.

The Hi-Vis tip is published and it is doing a real job. Half of panfish ice fishing is watching the tip for a bite that never reaches your hand, which is why our panfish ice rods page treats tip visibility as a specification.

ALPS thin-wire guides are published. Thin wire ices up less and sheds it more easily, which on a long day is the difference between a rod that keeps fishing and one you spend the afternoon picking at.

The drawback

It is a rod only. Budget for a reel and line on top, which roughly doubles the real cost and takes the gap against the combo from about forty dollars to something closer to eighty. 13 Fishing publishes no rod weight. And an ultra light rated to 1/16 oz has no business fishing for walleye, so it is a single-purpose purchase in a way the combo is not.

Questions people actually ask

Is an ice fishing combo good enough to start with?

Yes. The Cherrywood HD combo publishes a 24 in ultralight rod, a size 20 reel at 4.4:1 and pre-spooled line, which is a complete working outfit. The solid glass blank is less sensitive than a dedicated rod, and that matters more in your third season than your first.

Why is the 13 Fishing Tickle Stick so much more expensive?

It is a rod only, with no reel or line, so the real gap is larger than the sticker difference. What you pay for is a parallel composite blank and a published 1/64-1/16 oz lure rating, which is the window most winter panfish jigs fall in.

What lure weight does the Berkley Cherrywood HD Ice combo take?

Berkley does not publish a lure rating for it. The published line rating is 2-4 lb, which suggests light presentations, but there is no stated jig weight to check against.

Does a sensitive ice rod actually catch more fish?

For panfish on micro jigs it genuinely helps, because a bite is often a change in weight rather than a pull and a damping blank does not report it. For walleye on heavier spoons the difference is much smaller.

Should I buy an ice rod or an auger first?

The auger. A rod is useless without a hole, and a borrowed or basic rod will catch fish perfectly well while you work out whether ice fishing is for you.
