The best ice rods for panfish: buy the lure rating, not the length
A 1/64 oz jig weighs about half a gram. Almost no rod on the shelf can cast one, and on ice you are not casting anyway.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
Buy the published lure rating. The 13 Fishing Tickle Stick Gen 3 is published at 1/64–1/16 oz in 23 in Ultra Light and 0–1/64 oz in Super Ultra Light. Length only decides whether you can fish it in a shelter; the lure rating decides whether the rod tells you anything at all.

The criterion that decides it: lure rating, not power
Every other specification on an ice rod is secondary to one question: will the blank bend under the jig you are actually fishing?
A 1/32 oz tungsten jig weighs roughly 0.9 grams. A 1/64 oz weighs about 0.45. Those are the weights panfish ice fishing runs on, and they are far below what most rods on a shelf will register.
A rod that does not load is a stick. It will not show you the jig hanging, it will not show you the jig being lifted by a fish, and the first you know about a bite is the line going slack.
| Rod | Length | Published rating | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tickle Stick 23 SUL | 23 in | 0-1/64 oz lures | Bare hooks, 1/64 oz and smaller, deadsticking |
| Tickle Stick 23 UL | 23 in | 1/64-1/16 oz lures | The general panfish answer |
| Cherrywood HD Ice 24 UL | 24 in | 2-4 lb line | A first setup; no lure rating published |
| Carbon Ice 28 ML | 28 in | 2-6 lb line | Deep crappie and perch; no lure rating published |
Notice which column each maker fills in. 13 Fishing publishes a lure rating and no line rating; Ugly Stik and Berkley publish a line rating and no lure rating. For jig fishing the lure rating is the useful one, and its absence is a real gap rather than an oversight you should read past.
Power names on ice do not mean what they mean in summer
An open-water Ultra Light spinning rod is rated around 1/32–1/4 oz. An ice Ultra Light here is published at 1/64–1/16 oz — a quarter of the top end.
Ice rods are also short, and a short blank of the same stiffness feels much stiffer, because there is less length to distribute the bend. A 23 in Ultra Light and a 5 ft Ultra Light are not the same tool with different handles.
So do not carry your summer sizing across. Our open-water panfish rods page works through the same decision above the ice, and the two ladders barely overlap.
How short is too short
23 to 26 in. Shelter rods. Short enough to fish sitting down with the tip over the hole and the butt clear of your knees, and short enough to hold a fish while you reach for pliers.
27 to 30 in. The general range. Usable inside a shelter, better outside it, and enough sweep to move line at depth.
32 in and up. Hole hopping outside, standing up, often with heavier jigs. Awkward in a small box.
The mistake is buying long for the extra hook-setting power. You are lifting a jig a few inches to set a size 10 hook into a soft mouth; what you need is a tip that shows the bite, not a lever.
Flat tip, spring bobber, or neither
A large share of panfish takes are visual. The fish lifts the jig, the weight comes off the tip, and the tip straightens. If you are waiting to feel that, you have already missed it.
A flat tip, as the Tickle Sticks publish, resists rolling, so the movement happens in one plane where you can see it. It is built into the blank and there is nothing to fit or break.
A spring bobber is a fine wire coil fitted at the tip that exaggerates the same movement. It is the cheapest upgrade in ice fishing and it will out-detect any blank on its own, and it freezes, catches line and gets bent.
Neither is fine if you fish a float instead. A small float set to hold the jig at depth does the same job with no tip-watching at all, and our floats page covers sizing one so it goes under easily rather than sitting there.
The line that goes on it
2 to 4 lb monofilament for panfish, and that is inside the published rating of both rods here that state one.
Cold makes line stiff and gives it memory, which on a light jig means coils that hold the bait off vertical. Dedicated ice line exists for exactly that reason, and our ice line page covers what actually changes below freezing.
The other half is the reel. A spinning reel puts a twist into the line every time you pull it off the spool, and on 2 lb line with a half-gram jig there is no mass to resist it, so the jig spins slowly below the hole. Our ice reels page explains why an inline reel solves that and a spinning reel does not.
What we would skip
Combos above the panfish band. A 30 in Medium combo is sold as an ice rod and is a walleye rod. It will not load with a panfish jig at any depth.
Telescopic ice rods. They solve a transport problem you do not have — an ice rod is already two feet long — and every joint is a place the blank stops transmitting.
Rods with no published rating at all. A large share of the ice rod shelf states neither a lure rating nor a line rating. There is no way to check those against the jig in your hand, and this site will not recommend one on a photograph.
Spending the rod budget before the sonar budget. On hard water, knowing whether a fish is under you changes more than any rod does. Our ice electronics page covers the cheapest way to get that.
The rod is one part of a short list
Panfish ice fishing needs less equipment than almost anything else in this sport: a rod, a reel with light line, a box of small jigs, a way to make a hole, and a way to know the ice is safe.
Our ice jigs page covers the tungsten-against-lead question that decides how small you can go, our ice augers page covers the hole, and our ice thickness and safety page covers the part that is not optional.
If you are starting from nothing, our ice fishing gear for beginners page puts the whole list in order.
So what do I actually buy?
Buy on the published lure rating. One Ultra Light covers nearly all panfish jigging; add the Super Ultra Light only once you have met the days it is for.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best panfish ice rod
13 Fishing Tickle Stick Gen 3 (23 in Ultra Light)
13 Fishing
23 in Ultra Light published at 1/64-1/16 oz, on a PC2 flat-tip blank with a Hi-Vis tip and ALPS thin wire guides.
The published 1/64–1/16 oz rating is the reason this rod exists and the reason to buy it. A 1/32 oz tungsten jig weighs under a gram, and a rod that does not load with that weight cannot transmit what the jig is doing — which on ice is the entire job.
PC2 is published as parallel composite construction: linear fibers that let the blank be built with a genuinely flat tip rather than a round one. A flat section resists rolling, so when a fish lifts the jig the tip moves up rather than twisting sideways and hiding the bite.
The Hi-Vis tip is published as part of that. You are watching the rod tip, not feeling the bite, for a large share of panfish ice fishing — a bluegill inhaling a jig often shows as the tip straightening rather than bending.
23 in is short enough to fish sitting down inside a shelter, with the reel close to your body and the tip over the hole. Our ice shelters page covers why that matters: most of the day is spent on a bucket in a small box.
ALPS thin wire guides are published. Thin guides carry less ice than heavy framed ones, and a guide packed with ice is the most common reason a light line starts jumping off the rod instead of running through it.
The drawback
13 Fishing does not publish a rod weight or a line rating anywhere in the Tickle Stick table, so two of the figures you would normally check are simply absent. A flat tip is also more fragile than a round one — a blank section built to bend in one plane does not enjoy being trodden on in a dark shelter, and this is a rod that needs a tube or a case. It is the most expensive rod on this page, and against the budget combo below it is more than twice the money for the rod alone.

2. Best for the lightest jigs and negative fish
13 Fishing Tickle Stick Gen 3 (23 in Super Ultra Light)
13 Fishing
23 in Super Ultra Light published at 0-1/64 oz on the same PC2 flat-tip blank.
The published rating starts at zero. That is not marketing shorthand — it is the rod saying it will load under a bare hook and a waxworm, which is the presentation that catches fish on the days nothing else does.
Mid-winter panfish go through long spells of following a jig up and refusing it. The fix is almost always less: a smaller bait, a slower lift, and a tip soft enough that the jig barely moves when you breathe. A Super Ultra Light does that; an Ultra Light cannot.
Same PC2 flat tip, same Hi-Vis tip, same ALPS guides and Evolve reel seat as the Ultra Light. The only published difference between them is the lure rating, which makes this an unusually clean choice: you are buying a softer tip, nothing else.
It is also the right rod for a deadstick sitting in a second hole while you jig the first. A tip this soft shows a take before the fish feels resistance.
The drawback
Too soft for the job more often than people expect. On a 1/16 oz jig it is overloaded, in any wind outside a shelter the tip never settles, and a decent crappie will bend it into an arc that makes steering a fish away from the hole edge difficult. It also shares the Ultra Light's missing figures — no published rod weight, no published line rating — and the same fragility in the flat tip. This is a second rod, not a first one.

3. Best budget setup, rod and reel together
Berkley Cherrywood HD Ice Spinning Combo (24 in Ultra Light)
Berkley
24 in Ultra Light at a published 2-4 lb on a solid glass blank, with a size 20 reel at 4.4:1 holding 130 yd of 4 lb, pre-spooled.
This is the cheapest legitimate way onto the ice with a panfish rod, and it is a genuine setup rather than a toy: 24 in Ultra Light, published at 2–4 lb, with a matched size 20 reel published at 4.4:1 and 130 yd of 4 lb capacity.
A solid glass blank is published, and on a panfish ice rod that is a more defensible choice than it sounds. Glass is slower and more forgiving than graphite, which matters on tiny hooks: a soft blank lets a fish take the jig without feeling the rod, and it does not tear a size 12 hook out of a paper-thin crappie mouth on the lift.
Pre-spooled is published too. It is a small thing and it is the difference between fishing on the first morning and standing in a garage winding line in the cold.
Full cork handles are published rather than foam. Cork stays warmer to hold at minus ten than a bare graphite seat, which is a comfort detail that turns into a real one after three hours.
The drawback
Solid glass is heavy and dull compared with the Tickle Sticks — you will feel less, and on a day when fish are barely touching the jig that is exactly the wrong trade. Berkley publishes a line rating but no lure rating, so there is no stated figure for the weight it actually loads with. The size 20 reel is a basic one at a published 4.4:1 with no stated drag figure, and a spinning reel on 2 lb line puts more twist into a half-gram jig than anywhere else in fishing.

4. Best if it has to survive being trodden on
Ugly Stik Carbon Ice Spinning Rod (28 in Medium Light)
Ugly Stik
28 in Medium Light published at 2-6 lb on a 100% 24-ton graphite blank with Ugly Tuff one-piece guides.
28 in and Medium Light published at 2–6 lb puts this at the top of the panfish range and into the crossover band. For slab crappie in 25 ft, or perch holding near bottom on a heavier jig, it has backbone the Tickle Sticks do not.
Ugly Tuff one-piece stainless guides are published, with a coating stated as wear and rust resistant. A one-piece guide has no insert to crack or pop out, and on ice that matters more than on open water: an insert that lets go in the cold takes your line with it.
100% 24-ton graphite is published. It is the stiffest blank on this page, which buys sensitivity at depth and costs forgiveness up close.
The extra four or five inches of length is the other argument. Outside a shelter, a longer rod keeps line off a wind-blown hole edge and gives you more sweep to set a hook at 25 ft. Our panfish against walleye setups page covers where that line sits.
The drawback
Medium Light is genuinely too much rod for bluegill on a 1/32 oz jig — it will not load, and you will miss subtle takes that either Tickle Stick would show you. Ugly Stik publishes no lure rating anywhere in the Carbon Ice range, which on a rod bought for light jigging is the one figure you want, and no rod weight either. A stiff graphite blank also pulls small hooks on the lift more readily than glass does.

Questions people actually ask
What size ice rod is best for panfish?
23 to 26 in if you fish inside a shelter, 27 to 30 in if you fish outside or at depth. Length is a comfort decision; the published lure rating is what decides whether the rod works at all.
What lure rating do I need for panfish ice fishing?
Something that starts at 1/64 oz or below. A 1/32 oz tungsten jig is under a gram, and a rod rated from 1/8 oz will not bend under it — so it cannot show you the bite.
What is the difference between Ultra Light and Super Ultra Light ice rods?
On the Tickle Stick Gen 3 it is only the lure rating: 1/64-1/16 oz for the Ultra Light and 0-1/64 oz for the Super Ultra Light. Same blank, same tip, same guides — you are buying a softer tip and nothing else.
Do I need a spring bobber for panfish?
Not if the rod has a flat tip built into the blank, which is what the Tickle Stick publishes. A spring bobber detects more than any blank on its own, and it also freezes, catches line and bends.
Is an ice Ultra Light the same as a summer Ultra Light?
No. An open-water Ultra Light is usually rated to about 1/4 oz; the ice Ultra Light here is published at 1/16 oz. A short blank of the same stiffness also feels stiffer, because there is less length to spread the bend.
What pound line for a panfish ice rod?
2 to 4 lb monofilament, which sits inside the published rating of both rods here that state one. Use line sold for ice — cold stiffens ordinary mono and the coils hold a light jig off vertical.
