The best kayak fishing paddle: length is set by the boat, not by you
Wide boat, high seat, long paddle. Get the length wrong and every stroke hits the gunwale.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
For a 32 in wide fishing kayak, start at 250 cm and go to 260 cm if you sit high. The Bending Branches Angler Classic publishes 240 to 280 cm, 35.5 oz and a 7.5 x 18 in blade. Fishing paddles are longer than touring paddles because fishing kayaks are wider and the seat sits higher.

Sizing, which is the entire decision
Two measurements decide paddle length: how wide your boat is, and how high you sit in it. Your own height matters far less than either, which surprises most people.
A fishing kayak is wide — 30 to 36 in against a touring kayak’s 22 to 26 — so the blade has to reach further out to enter the water cleanly. And a fishing seat is raised off the deck, which raises your hands and effectively shortens the paddle.
| Kayak width | Low seat | High seat |
|---|---|---|
| 28-30 in | 240 cm | 250 cm |
| 30-33 in | 250 cm | 260 cm |
| 33-36 in | 260 cm | 270 cm |
| 36 in and up | 270 cm | 280 cm |
Our fishing kayaks page covers the hull side of this — the Perception Pescador 10.0 publishes 32 in of width, which puts it squarely in the 250 to 260 cm band.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. A paddle slightly too long is slightly slower; a paddle too short makes you lean and bang the shaft on the gunwale with every stroke.
Weight, and why it is worth paying for
A relaxed paddling cadence is around 30 strokes a minute. An hour of paddling is roughly 1,800 strokes, and every one lifts the whole paddle.
That is why a 10 oz difference between a fiberglass and a carbon shaft is not a marginal spec. It is the difference between arriving at the far bank ready to fish and arriving ready to sit down.
The order of upgrades, if money is limited: get the length right first, then reduce weight, then worry about blade shape. A correctly sized heavy paddle beats a light one that is 20 cm too short.
Blade size and shape
Large blades move more water per stroke. Good for short bursts, fighting current and getting moving quickly; tiring over distance.
Small blades are gentler on shoulders and better for a high cadence over long distances.
Fishing kayaks argue for moderate blades. You are not covering distance for its own sake — you are repositioning, holding against a breeze, and making short controlled moves between casts.
The fishing-specific features
A hook retrieval notch in the blade. A lure snagged in a branch three feet beyond your reach is a routine kayak problem, and the alternative is breaking off.
A measuring tape on the shaft. Published at 40 in on the Angler Classic. Useful where a legal size limit applies and you would otherwise carry a board.
A paddle leash. Not included, and the single most important accessory. A paddle put down to fight a fish will slide off a wet deck, and a paddle floating away from a kayak is a serious situation rather than an inconvenience. Our kayak safety page treats it that way.
Leashes are here if you need one: kayak paddle leashes on Amazon.
Two-piece, and what a ferrule does
Nearly every kayak paddle splits in the middle. That is for transport and for the feather angle — the offset between the two blades.
A snap-button ferrule, as published here, gives fixed choices: 0 degrees (blades aligned) or 60 degrees (offset). Zero is simpler and fine for most fishing; 60 helps in a headwind because the upper blade slices through the air rather than catching it.
The adjustable alternative — a lever-lock ferrule — lets you tune both length and feather on the water, at a small weight penalty. If you paddle more than one boat, it is worth it.
Our rigging page covers where the paddle lives while you are fishing, which is the other half of the problem.
So what do I actually buy?
Measure the boat, pick the length from the table, and buy a leash at the same time. Weight is the upgrade after that.

1. Best kayak fishing paddle
Bending Branches Angler Classic Kayak Paddle
Bending Branches
35.5 oz with a 7.5 x 18 in blade, published in 240 through 280 cm, fiberglass shaft with a carbon ferrule insert.
Five published lengths from 240 to 280 cm is the reason this is the paddle to buy. Sizing is the whole problem in this category, and a range that covers narrow boats and wide ones means you can actually match your hull.
35.5 oz is a published figure and it is the one that matters most. A paddle stroke lifts that weight roughly a thousand times an hour, and the difference between a 35 oz paddle and a 45 oz one is something you feel in your shoulders by lunchtime rather than immediately.
The published 7.5 x 18 in blade at 102.5 sq in is a moderate area. A big blade moves more water per stroke and tires you faster; a small one is gentler and slower. This sits in the middle, which is the right place for a boat you are paddling short distances between fishing spots.
Two published details are specifically for fishing rather than paddling: a hook retrieval system built into the blade for lures snagged out of reach, and a 40 in tape measure printed on the shaft so you can measure a fish against the paddle without carrying a board.
The ferrule is published as snap-button with 0 or 60 degree feather and left or right-hand control, with a carbon insert. Feathering offsets the two blades so the upper one cuts through wind edge-on, which matters on an exposed lake.
The drawback
A fiberglass shaft with a nylon blade is the mid tier, not the light one — a carbon-shaft paddle can be 10 oz lighter, and on a long paddle day that is the single biggest upgrade available. The snap-button ferrule is also fixed-length: you cannot fine-tune between 250 and 260 cm the way the adjustable Versa-Lok version allows, so you have to size it right the first time. And Bending Branches publishes the blade area but not a shaft diameter, which is the figure smaller hands would want.

Questions people actually ask
What length kayak paddle do I need for fishing?
Size it from the boat, not from your height. A 30 to 33 in wide fishing kayak wants 250 cm with a low seat and 260 cm with a raised seat. If you are between sizes, take the longer one.
Why are fishing kayak paddles longer than regular ones?
Because fishing kayaks are wider — 30 to 36 in against a touring kayak's 22 to 26 — and the seat sits higher off the deck. Both push the blade further from the water.
Does kayak paddle weight really matter?
Yes. A relaxed cadence is about 1,800 strokes an hour, and every one lifts the whole paddle. A 10 oz saving between fiberglass and carbon is the single biggest comfort upgrade after getting the length right.
Do I need a paddle leash?
Yes, and it is not optional on a fishing kayak. You put the paddle down every time you cast, and a paddle that slides off a wet deck and drifts away from the boat is a safety problem, not an inconvenience.
