Reel size 1000 against 2500: where the line actually runs out
One holds 110 yards of 4 lb. The other holds 130 yards of 8 lb. That gap is the whole decision.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
A 25-size publishes 110 yd of 4 lb and 22.4 in per turn. A 2500 publishes 130 yd of 8 lb and 27 in per turn. Buy the small one for panfish, trout and finesse; buy the 2500 if bass are on the list.

Size numbers are not standardized. Capacity is
A Pflueger 25, a Shimano 1000 and a Daiwa 1000 are roughly the same class, and nothing defines that. The manufacturers each number their own ladder.
Published line capacity is the figure that compares. 110 yd of 4 lb against 130 yd of 8 lb is a real comparison; "25" against "2500" is not.
| Figure | President 25X | Max SX 2500 |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 110 yd / 4 lb, 90 yd / 6 lb | 130 yd / 8 lb |
| Retrieve per turn | 22.4 in | 27 in |
| Gear ratio | 5.2:1 | 5.2:1 |
| Weight | 8.1 oz | 8.0 oz |
| Bearings | 10 + 1 | 6 + 1 |
Note the two identical gear ratios producing a 4.6 in difference in retrieve. That is spool diameter doing the work, and it is why our gear ratio page argues for reading inches per turn instead.
The weight assumption that turns out to be wrong
Most people go small partly to save weight. On this pair the small reel is actually 0.1 oz heavier.
Reel weight tracks build quality and materials at least as much as size. A ten-bearing 25-size with a metal-heavy build can easily out-weigh a six-bearing 2500 with a graphite frame.
So if you want a light setup, read the published weight. Do not infer it from the size number.
Which size, by what you fish
1000 to 25-size for bluegill, crappie, stocked trout and finesse presentations on 4 to 6 lb line. Our panfish reels page covers this class in full.
2500 for bass, walleye and general fishing on 8 to 10 lb line or 15 lb braid. If you own one spinning reel, this is the size.
3000 and up for pike, catfish and big baits. Our 2500 against 3000 page takes the ladder from here.
Drag rarely decides this, and here is when it does
Neither reel on this page publishes a maximum drag figure, which tells you how much weight the industry places on it at this size.
For panfish, trout and bass it genuinely does not matter. None of those fish runs far enough or hard enough to test a drag that is working at all, and what you actually want is smoothness at the start of a turn rather than a high ceiling.
It starts to matter in exactly two situations. The first is light line with a heavy fish — a carp or a channel catfish on 4 lb line, where a drag that grabs rather than slips breaks you off instantly. The second is braid, which has no stretch to absorb a surge, so the drag is the only shock absorber in the system.
Both are arguments for the smaller reel having a good drag rather than a strong one. Our drag page covers setting it against a scale rather than guessing by pulling with your hand.
Braid changes the arithmetic
Capacity is published in mono, and braid is far thinner at the same rating. 15 lb braid measures about the same as 4 lb mono, so a reel published at 110 yd of 4 lb holds roughly that much 15 lb braid.
That is how a small reel ends up holding line far stronger than its rating suggests, and it is the single best argument for braid on light tackle. The figures are on our braid diameter chart.
So what do I actually buy?
Read the published capacity, not the size number. Small for panfish and trout, 2500 if bass are anywhere on the list.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best small spinning reel
Pflueger President Spinning Reel (25X)
Pflueger
10 stainless bearings plus a roller, 8.1 oz, published at 110 yd of 4 lb and 22.4 in per turn.
110 yd of 4 lb is the published figure that defines this class. It is not much line, and for the fish it is built for it is far more than enough — a bluegill does not run, and a stocked trout rarely takes twenty yards.
22.4 in per turn is deliberately slow. On light line with small baits you are fishing slowly anyway, and a slow retrieve gives you finer control over a 1/16 oz jig than a fast one does.
Ten stainless bearings plus a roller at this size is a genuinely good specification, and it is the same count Pflueger publishes on its larger reels. Smoothness matters more at this end, because everything you are trying to feel is faint.
At 8.1 oz it balances a light or ultralight rod properly. Our ultralight rods page covers the other half of that pairing, and a small reel on a light rod is the one combination beginners get wrong least often.
The drawback
The published 4 lb capacity is a real ceiling: put 8 lb line on this and the spool holds well under 90 yd, which is thin cover for a surprise catfish. Pflueger publishes no maximum drag figure, and a small reel's drag is the component most likely to be marginal. It is also only 0.7 oz lighter than the 2500 on this page, so the weight argument for going small is weaker than most people assume.

2. Best all-round size
Abu Garcia Max SX Spinning Reel (2500)
Abu Garcia
5.2:1 at a published 27 in per turn, 8.0 oz, 130 yd of 8 lb on a machined aluminum braid-ready spool.
130 yd of 8 lb published is the capacity that makes a 2500 the default size. It covers bass, walleye, trout and panfish with margin, which is why almost every all-round setup on this site is built on one.
27 in per turn against the 25-size’s 22.4 is nearly five inches more line per crank, from the same published 5.2:1 ratio. That difference is spool diameter alone, and it is the cleanest illustration on this site of why ratio is not comparable across sizes.
A machined aluminum braid-ready spool is published. Braid on a spool without a proper lip or backing slips, and our spinning line page covers the backing step people skip.
8.0 oz is fractionally lighter than the 25-size here, which sounds wrong until you remember that weight tracks build quality as much as size.
The drawback
Six ball bearings plus a roller against the President's ten is a real difference in how smooth it feels, and on light line you notice it. Abu Garcia publishes no maximum drag figure either. And a 2500 on a true ultralight rod is nose-heavy and kills the feel the rod was built for, so this is not a one-size-fits-everything answer.

Questions people actually ask
Is a 1000 or a 2500 spinning reel better?
A 1000 or 25-size for panfish, trout and finesse on 4 to 6 lb line; a 2500 for bass, walleye and general fishing. Compare published capacity rather than the size number, which is not standardized between brands.
How much line does a 1000-size reel hold?
The Pflueger 25X publishes 110 yd of 4 lb and 90 yd of 6 lb. That is plenty for panfish and trout, and thin cover if something large takes the bait.
Is a smaller reel lighter?
Not necessarily. On this pair the 25-size is 8.1 oz and the 2500 is 8.0 oz. Reel weight tracks build and materials as much as size, so read the published figure rather than inferring it.
Does braid change which reel size I need?
Yes. Braid is far thinner than mono at the same rating — 15 lb braid measures about the same as 4 lb mono — so a small spool can hold line much stronger than its published rating suggests.
