The best line for a spinning reel, and why diameter decides it
A spinning spool cares about diameter and memory. Published diameter is the figure to compare.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
Braid with a fluorocarbon leader is the best general answer for a spinning reel, because braid has no memory and comes off the spool without coiling. Power Pro publishes 10 lb at 0.006 in — the diameter of 2 lb mono — against Trilene XL at 0.010 in for 8 lb.

Why a spinning reel is different
A spinning spool is fixed. The line does not pull off it in the direction it was wound — it comes off over the lip in loops, one per turn, and every one of those loops is a twist waiting to happen.
That makes two properties matter more on a spinning reel than anywhere else: memory, which is whether the line holds the spool’s shape, and limpness, which is whether it flattens out once it is off.
It is also why the strength rating is the wrong figure to compare. What fills a spool and what jumps off it is diameter, and diameter is published.
| Line | Rating | Diameter |
|---|---|---|
| Power Pro braid | 10 lb | 0.006 in |
| Power Pro braid | 15 lb | 0.007 in |
| Trilene XL mono | 8 lb | 0.010 in |
| Seaguar InvizX fluorocarbon | 8 lb | 0.009 in |
15 lb braid is thinner than 8 lb mono. That single comparison is why braid dominates spinning reels: nearly twice the strength in less space.
The arrangement most people should run
Mono backing, braid main line, fluorocarbon leader. It sounds fussy and it takes one extra five-minute step per season.
The backing is a layer of cheap mono on the bare spool, because braid is slippery and a spool of pure braid will rotate under load instead of the line moving.
The braid is the main line, for the diameter and the sensitivity.
The leader is 18 in to 3 ft of fluorocarbon, for invisibility and for a little abrasion resistance where it counts.
Our knots page covers the braid-to-leader connection, which is the one knot worth learning properly.
What to spool for a 2500 or 3000 reel
General freshwater: 15 lb braid at 0.007 in with a 10 or 12 lb fluorocarbon leader.
Finesse and clear water: 10 lb braid at 0.006 in with an 8 lb leader, or 8 lb fluorocarbon straight through.
Learning, or topwater: 8 lb Trilene XL straight through, replaced every season.
Pike and heavy cover: 30 lb braid with a wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader — our pike reels page covers the capacity arithmetic.
Fill it properly, and fill it full
An underfilled spinning spool casts badly, because the line has to climb a deeper lip on the way out. Fill to about 1/8 in below the spool rim — no more, or it will jump off in loops on its own.
Wind under tension, and check for twist as you go. Our spooling page and line twist page cover the details, and twist introduced during spooling is the most common self-inflicted problem in spinning fishing.
So what do I actually buy?
Braid on the spool, fluorocarbon on the end, and mono if you are learning or fishing topwater. Diameter is the figure to compare, not the rating.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best spinning reel line
Power Pro Spectra Braided Line
Power Pro
Published at 0.006 in for 10 lb, 0.007 in for 15 lb and 0.009 in for 20 lb — 2, 4 and 6 lb mono diameters.
Braid has essentially no memory. It does not remember the shape of the spool, so it does not come off in coils, and coils are the root cause of nearly every wind knot a spinning reel produces.
The published diameters are the argument. 10 lb braid at 0.006 in has the diameter of 2 lb mono. That means far more line on the spool, longer casts from a fuller spool, and less line drag in current or wind.
No stretch means you feel everything. On a spinning setup fishing soft plastics or a drop shot, that is the difference between detecting a bite and finding out about it afterward, as our drop shot page sets out.
15 lb at 0.007 in is the size to buy for a 2500 or 3000-size reel doing general work. It is strong enough to pull free of most snags and thin enough to cast a long way.
The drawback
Braid is visible in clear water, which is why it needs a leader — that is an extra knot, an extra step and an extra failure point. It has zero stretch, so it pulls trebles out of fish and it will not forgive a locked drag. It also cuts into itself on the spool when a hard hookset buries a loop under tension, and it needs a mono backing layer underneath or the whole spool slips.

2. Best leader, and best straight-through in clear water
Seaguar InvizX Fluorocarbon Line
Seaguar
Published at 0.009 in for 8 lb, 0.010 in for 10 lb and 0.011 in for 12 lb, with a refractive index close to water.
Fluorocarbon’s refractive index is close to that of water, which is why it is far harder for a fish to see than braid or mono. In clear water that is a genuine difference rather than a marketing claim.
It is also denser than water, so it sinks. On a spinning reel fishing bottom contact baits that helps; fishing a topwater it does not, which is the one place mono still wins.
InvizX is published as the softer, more manageable fluorocarbon in Seaguar’s range, which is what makes it usable straight through on a spinning reel at all. Stiff fluorocarbon on a spinning spool is a coiling problem.
As a leader it is the default: 18 in to 3 ft of 10 or 12 lb tied to braid gives you the sensitivity of braid with the invisibility of fluorocarbon. Our line comparison page covers the full trade.
The drawback
Fluorocarbon has memory, and memory on a spinning spool means coils. Even a soft fluorocarbon straight through will develop loops if you leave it on the reel over a winter. It is the most expensive of the three by some distance, and its knots are less forgiving — a fluorocarbon knot tied dry or cinched too fast fails at a fraction of its rating.

3. Best for beginners and topwater
Berkley Trilene XL Monofilament Line
Berkley
Published at 0.009 in for 6 lb, 0.010 in for 8 lb and 0.011 in for 10 lb, with stretch and low memory for a mono.
Mono stretches, and stretch forgives mistakes. A hookset that is too hard, a drag that is too tight, a fish that surges at the net — mono absorbs all three, and that is exactly what a beginner needs.
It floats, which makes it the right line for topwater fishing. Fluorocarbon pulls the nose of a walking bait down; braid lies on the surface and drags. Our topwater page covers why.
XL is published as the low-memory, limp version of the Trilene family, which is what makes it suitable for a spinning reel. Stiff mono is the classic cause of line jumping off a spinning spool in loops.
It is also cheap enough to replace every season, and replacing line every season does more for most setups than any tackle purchase. Our spooling page covers doing it without introducing twist.
The drawback
Stretch is also the drawback: at distance you lose bite detection and hooksetting power, and by 40 yd out a mono hookset is mostly stretching line. It has more memory than braid, so it will hold spool coils after a cold night. It abrades faster than fluorocarbon on rock, and it degrades in sunlight over a season whether you fish it or not.

Questions people actually ask
What line is best for a spinning reel?
Braid with a fluorocarbon leader, for most fishing. Braid has almost no memory so it does not come off the fixed spool in coils, and its published diameter is far thinner than mono at the same strength.
Why does line jump off my spinning reel in loops?
Memory and overfilling. Line that holds the shape of the spool comes off in coils, and a spool filled past about 1/8 in below the rim spills on its own. Braid and limp mono both reduce it.
Do I need mono backing under braid?
Yes. Braid is slippery, and a spool of pure braid rotates against the spool under load instead of the line moving. A layer of cheap mono underneath gives it something to grip.
What pound test line for a 2500 spinning reel?
15 lb braid at 0.007 in with a 10 to 12 lb fluorocarbon leader for general freshwater, or 8 lb monofilament straight through if you are learning. Compare diameter rather than the rating.
