Ice fishing jig boxes: which size, and why the foam matters more than the box

An ice jig costs a few dollars and takes thirty seconds to lose. A jig box is the cheapest piece of ice gear that pays for itself in one trip.

By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

Clam Slim Jig Box

The short answer

Buy the Clam Slim Jig Box first. Its micro-slit foam holds a tungsten jig by the hook rather than dropping it in a compartment, and the slim profile fits a bib pocket, which is where a jig box actually needs to live when you are hole-hopping. Buy the standard Clam Jig Box in Large instead if you want pre-cut slots and the widest size range, the Dual Tray if you carry spoons and plastics as well as jigs, and the Deluxe Spoon Box only if spoons are what you fish. One caution before you shop: Clam publishes construction and SKU for every box in this line but does not publish external dimensions for any of them, so you cannot compare footprints on paper.

What actually separates these boxes

Three things, and only three: how the interior holds a jig, whether the lid seals, and whether the box fits in a pocket. Everything else on a jig box is marketing.

Foam against slots: the only decision that changes how you fish

A pre-cut slot is a hole the jig drops into. Slit foam is a cut the hook pushes into. The difference shows up in the dark, with gloves on, at the moment a school moves through.

Foam wins for small tungsten because the jig stands up and the hook points the same way every time, so you pick it out by the bend. Slots win for volume and for loading speed: you can fill a slotted box in a minute and a foam box takes five, because every jig has to be pushed in individually.

Foam loses over time. Repeatedly using the same slits widens them and the grip goes, and none of these boxes is sold with a replacement insert. Slots do not wear out. If you buy one box for a decade, that argues for slots; if you buy one box for this season’s panfish, it argues for foam.

The seal is not about dropping it in the hole

A waterproof seal on an ice box is not protecting against immersion. It is protecting against the two things that actually happen: snow melting inside a warm shelter, and a box that has been sitting on wet ice going into a sled and then into a garage for a week.

That is why a hook rusts in storage rather than on the ice. Clam publishes a waterproof silicone seal on the Slim and a watertight silicone seal on the Dual Tray; the standard Jig Box is published as having a waterproof seal without naming the material, and the Deluxe Spoon Box publishes no seal at all. If your box lives in an unheated garage between trips, that ranking is the one to buy on.

A rusted hook is also a blunt hook. Our hook sharpener page covers what to do about the ones already in the box.

What Clam does not publish, and why it matters here

Not one box in this line has published external dimensions. For a product category whose entire purpose is fitting into a specific space - a bib pocket, a bucket, a sled tray - that is the single most useful number, and it is absent across the range.

We are not going to supply it from retailer copy or a listing bullet. What we can say is what Clam itself commits to: the Slim is described as ultra-slim and named as fitting jacket pockets and bibs, and the standard line is sized from Mini to Magnum. Buy on those descriptions, not on a number you found somewhere.

How many boxes you actually need

One, until the day you spend two minutes looking for a jig you know you own. Then two: a pocket box with this week’s sizes, and a bigger one in the sled with everything else.

The mistake is the third box. Past two, you stop knowing which box a bait is in, and a system that needs a search is worse than one drawer. Our ice fishing gear page treats storage as part of the kit rather than an accessory for exactly this reason.

So what do I actually buy?

One Slim Jig Box if you fish tungsten for panfish. One Large from the standard line if you want a family you can scale. The Dual Tray only if you genuinely carry mixed tackle, and the Mini as the ten-dollar extra or the gift.

The picks, in full

Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.

1. Best ice jig box overall

Clam Slim Jig Box

Clam Outdoors

ABS shell, waterproof silicone seal, thick micro-slit foam and a clear lid, in an ultra-slim profile built for a jacket or bib pocket.

The micro-slit foam is the reason this is the first box to buy. A tungsten panfish jig weighs under a gram and has a hook you cannot see properly in low light; a compartment box turns a dozen of them into one tangled mass, and you find the right one by tipping the lot into your palm. Slit foam holds each jig by the hook bend, upright, so you pick the one you want with cold fingers and nothing else moves.

Clam publishes the foam as thick micro-slit and specifically says it is sized for tungsten and lead jigs, which matters: coarse slit foam built for bass hooks will not grip a #12 tungsten.

The second reason is the profile. Clam publishes this as ultra-slim and names jacket pockets, bibs, backpacks and gear bags as where it goes. A box that lives in your bib is a box you use on the ice; a box in the sled is one you walk back to. Our ice jig page argues the cadence matters more than the color, and you cannot change cadence or size if changing jigs means a trip to the sled.

The drawback

Clam publishes no external dimensions, so you cannot check it against your bib pocket before it arrives. Size naming is also inconsistent between Clam and Amazon: Clam currently lists this line as Slim Jig Box in Small, Medium and Large at $12.99 to $19.99, while the Amazon listing is titled Super Slim Jig Box Medium at the Large price. Foam also wears - slit foam loses its grip after a season or two of the same slots, and Clam does not sell replacement inserts for it.

2. Best if you want the widest size range

Clam Jig Box (Large, 8814)

Clam Outdoors

Precision pre-cut jig slots and a waterproof seal, in a line that runs Mini, Small, Medium, Large and Magnum.

This is the long-standing Clam jig box, SKU 108814, and the reason to pick it over the Slim is the range. Clam publishes five sizes on the same design - Mini at $9.99 through Magnum at $49.99 - which means you can standardize on one interior and scale it: Mini in the bib, Large in the bucket, Magnum in the sled.

Large is the size to buy rather than the Medium, for a reason that has nothing to do with capacity: Clam still publishes the Medium (108813) on its own site, but it has no live Amazon listing, so the Large is the one you can actually buy today. It is one step up at a published $17.99 against the Medium’s $14.99, on the same interior.

That is the same argument our tackle organization page makes for open-water tackle, where the 3700 footprint is the standard worth committing to. Ice has no equivalent industry footprint, so committing to one manufacturer's family is the closest thing available.

Clam publishes the interior as precision pre-cut jig slots rather than slit foam. In practice that means a jig drops into a slot and stays put, which is faster to load and marginally slower to pick from than foam.

The drawback

Pre-cut slots fix the layout: a jig bigger than the slot does not fit and a jig smaller than it rattles, and unlike foam you cannot cut a new slot where you want one. Clam publishes no dimensions here either, and the only weight figure on the listing is a shipping weight. The Large is also more box than a pocket angler needs - it is a bucket and sled box, and the Mini is the one that goes in a bib.

3. Best for mixed tackle

Clam Dual Tray Jig Box

Clam Outdoors

Lightweight ABS shell, watertight silicone seal, dual-sided with polyethylene interior trays.

The dual-sided design is the point. One box opens from both faces, so jigs live on one side and spoons, plastics and terminal tackle on the other, and you stop carrying two boxes to a hole you may fish for twenty minutes.

Clam publishes polyethylene trays rather than foam. That is the right choice for mixed tackle - plastics do not want to be pressed into foam, and spoons with trebles want a tray wall between them - and the wrong one if everything you carry is a bare tungsten jig.

At $19.99 MSRP it is the most expensive box on this page, which is defensible only if you actually fish mixed tackle. If you fish one style, the Slim is less money and better at it.

The drawback

Dual-sided means you open the wrong side roughly half the time with gloves on, and it means the box has to be laid flat to work - on a bucket lid that is fine, on a snow bank it is not. Clam publishes no dimensions, no tray count and no compartment count, so the only thing you can compare on paper is the shell material and the seal.

4. Best for spoons only

Clam Deluxe Spoon Box (Small)

Clam Outdoors

Cellular foam insert that holds each spoon and protects the hooks, under a clear polypropylene lid.

Spoons are the one ice bait that genuinely needs its own box, because a treble hook finds another treble hook every single time. Clam publishes a cellular foam insert specifically to hold each spoon in place and prevent hook damage in transit, which is the whole job.

The clear polypropylene lid is the other published feature worth paying for: you read the box before you open it, which in a wind is the difference between changing spoons and losing one.

Our spoons page covers the baits themselves and the weight ranges that matter under the ice.

The drawback

It does exactly one thing, and if your spoon collection is four baits it is an indulgence - they would fit in the Dual Tray's tray side. Clam publishes the Small at $14.99 and no dimensions, and the line appears to have only the one size, so there is no way to scale up without buying a second box.

5. Best cheap first box

Clam Jig Box (Mini)

Clam Outdoors

The same pre-cut slots and waterproof seal as the Large, at $9.99 MSRP.

Ten dollars for the smallest version of a box that already works is the easiest recommendation on this page, and it is the one we would put in a stocking. Our ice fishing gift page makes the case for jig boxes as the safest ice gift there is: there is no size to get wrong and no preference to guess at.

It is also the right second box for a specific job - all your #12 and #14 tungsten in one Mini that lives permanently in a bib pocket, with the full collection in something larger back at the sled.

The drawback

Mini means mini, and Clam does not publish how many slots it has or how big it is, so you are buying a size category rather than a known capacity. Anyone who already owns a jig box will outgrow it immediately; it is a starting point or a supplement, not an upgrade.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best ice fishing jig box?

The Clam Slim Jig Box, for most people. Its micro-slit foam holds a tungsten jig upright by the hook so you can pick one out with gloves on, it has a waterproof silicone seal, and Clam builds it slim enough to live in a bib pocket rather than the sled.

Do I need a special box for ice jigs?

Yes, if you fish tungsten. Standard tackle trays are built around bass-size baits, and a #12 tungsten jig in a bass compartment tangles with every other jig in it. The slit foam or pre-cut slots in an ice-specific box hold each jig separately.

What size jig box should I buy?

Start with one you can carry in a pocket. Clam publishes the standard line in Mini, Small, Medium, Large and Magnum, but only the Mini, Small, Large and Magnum currently have live Amazon listings - the Medium does not, so Large is the practical first buy from that line. Clam does not publish external dimensions for any size, so the size name is all you have to go on.

Slit foam or slotted jig box - which is better?

Foam for small tungsten jigs, because they stand up and the hook points the same way every time. Slots for volume and faster loading, and because slots do not wear out. Foam slits widen with repeated use and no replacement inserts are sold for these boxes.

Do ice fishing jig boxes need to be waterproof?

The seal is not there for dropping it down the hole. It stops snow melting inside the box in a warm shelter and stops a wet box rusting its contents in an unheated garage between trips, which is where hooks actually go rusty.

Can I use an ice jig box for open water?

For small finesse baits, yes - drop shot hooks, ned heads and small jig heads sit in slit foam as happily as tungsten does. It will not hold crankbaits, spinnerbaits or anything with a wire arm, so it supplements a 3700 tray rather than replacing it.
