Pflueger President against President XT: what the extra money buys
Two reels, one size apart in name only. Four published figures separate them, and one of them is the reason to upgrade.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
The XT publishes 6.2:1 and 30.2 in per turn against the President’s 5.2:1 and 25.3 in, at 7.7 oz against 8.8 oz, on a carbon body rather than graphite. Both publish the same 10 stainless bearings plus a roller. You are buying retrieve speed and an ounce, not a bearing count.

Four real differences, one identical row that most buyers assume is the differentiator, and one figure neither reel publishes.
Retrieve speed is the actual decision
Gear ratio on its own is not comparable between reels, because spool diameter also decides how much line moves. Both of these publish inches per turn, which is comparable, and the gap is about 19%.
That matters in one direction and hurts in the other. Fast retrieve wins when you need to take up slack — a fish running at you, a soft plastic hit on the fall, a bladed jig you are burning over grass. Slow retrieve wins on deep crankbaits and anything you are trying not to overwork.
Our gear ratio page maps the bands properly. In short: the President sits in the moderate band and the XT sits at the top of the all-round band.
Carbon against graphite, honestly
Both are composites. "Carbon" in reel marketing usually means a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer, and "graphite" usually means a glass-and-resin composite with some graphite in it. Neither is metal.
The published outcome is what to judge them on: the carbon body reel weighs 7.7 oz where the graphite one weighs 8.8, at the same size and the same bearing count. That is a real, measurable 12% saving.
What neither maker publishes is stiffness under load, which is the property that actually matters. Treat the weight figure as evidence and the material name as marketing.
Which to buy
Buy the President if you fish crankbaits, jerkbaits and slow presentations, or if this is your first reel at this level. It is the better value and the better tool for moving baits fished at moderate speed.
Buy the XT if you fish soft plastics, bladed jigs or anything where slack pickup decides hooksets, or if you hold the rod all day and an ounce matters to you.
If you are choosing a size rather than a model, our 1000 against 2500 page and 2500 against 3000 page cover that separately — and size is a bigger decision than either of these reels.
So what do I actually buy?
Same family, same size, one ounce and five inches of retrieve apart. Pick on technique, not on the bearing count — it is identical.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Pflueger President XT
Pflueger President XT Spinning Reel (30X)
Pflueger
6.2:1 at a published 30.2 in per turn, 7.7 oz, carbon body with a machined aluminum main gear and braid-ready spool.
30.2 in per turn is the headline and it is a large jump: almost five inches more line per handle turn than the standard President. On a spinning reel that changes which techniques feel natural rather than which fish you can land.
The published carbon body against the President’s graphite is the structural difference. Carbon composite is stiffer for its weight, which is how Pflueger gets to 7.7 oz — over an ounce lighter than the reel it sits above.
A machined aluminum main gear is published rather than a cast one. Gear material is what decides whether a reel still feels smooth in its third season, and it is the least visible part of this comparison.
Published capacity is quoted in braid as well as mono — 6 lb braid at 275 yd — alongside a machined aluminum braid-ready spool. That is Pflueger acknowledging what people actually spool, and our diameter chart explains why the two figures differ so much.
The drawback
Pflueger publishes no maximum drag figure for either reel, so the number you would most want on an upgrade is absent from both sides of this comparison. The faster 6.2:1 retrieve is also a genuine disadvantage on deep crankbaits, where it makes fishing the bait too quickly the default. And at roughly half again the President's price it is a meaningful step for a reel in the same family and the same size.

2. Better value, and the better crankbait reel
Pflueger President Spinning Reel (30X)
Pflueger
5.2:1 at a published 25.3 in per turn, 8.8 oz, graphite body and rotor with the same 10+1 bearing count.
The same 10 stainless bearings plus a roller are published on both reels. That is the specification buyers fixate on, and it is identical — which is useful to know before paying the difference.
25.3 in per turn is a moderate retrieve, and moderate is an advantage rather than a limitation for a lot of fishing. It makes fishing a crankbait too fast harder to do by accident, which is the most common error with moving baits.
Published capacity of 145 yd of 6 lb is more than most freshwater fishing needs, and the graphite body is perfectly adequate for the loads a bass or a walleye applies.
Our bass spinning reels page leads with this reel for exactly those reasons.
The drawback
8.8 oz is nearly an ounce heavier than the XT, and weight is the figure you notice at hour four rather than in the shop. The graphite body flexes more under heavy drag than a carbon one, which shows up as gears going slightly out of mesh under load. And 25.3 in per turn is genuinely slow for frogs, bladed jigs or anything where you must move a lot of line quickly.

Questions people actually ask
What is the difference between the Pflueger President and the President XT?
Four published figures: the XT is 6.2:1 against 5.2:1, 30.2 in of retrieve per turn against 25.3, 7.7 oz against 8.8, and a carbon body against graphite. The bearing count is identical at 10 stainless plus a roller.
Is the Pflueger President XT worth the extra money?
If you fish soft plastics or bladed jigs where slack pickup decides the hookset, or you hold the rod all day, yes. If you mostly fish crankbaits, the slower standard President is the better tool as well as the cheaper one.
Do the President and President XT have the same bearings?
Yes — both publish 10 stainless steel bearings plus one roller bearing. That is the specification most buyers assume separates them, and it does not.
What is the maximum drag on a Pflueger President?
Pflueger does not publish a maximum drag figure for either the President or the President XT. That is a genuine gap in both spec sheets rather than something we have omitted.
