Rods
The best pike rods: medium-heavy power and a rod long enough to steer
Power for the hookset, length for the steer, and a lure rating that actually covers your baits.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
A 7 ft medium-heavy rod is the pike default. The Ugly Stik Catfish spinning rod publishes 15–30 lb line and 1/2–3 oz lures; the GX2 medium-heavy combo publishes 8–20 lb and 1/4–3/4 oz. Match the lure rating to the baits you actually throw — that figure decides more than the power label does.

Power, and why medium-heavy
Two reasons, and neither is the size of the fish. Pike are strong but they are not unstoppable, and a medium rod will land a big one.
The first reason is the hookset. A pike’s mouth is bone and cartilage, and driving a large single or treble into it takes force that a medium blank absorbs instead of transmitting.
The second is the lure weight. Pike baits are big, and lure rating scales with power. A medium rod rated to 5/8 oz cannot cast a 1 1/2 oz swimbait without either overloading the blank or casting it badly.
| Rod | Line | Lure | Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| GX2 combo, med-heavy | 8-20 lb | 1/4-3/4 oz | Spinnerbaits, spoons, medium jerkbaits |
| Catfish spinning, med-heavy | 15-30 lb | 1/2-3 oz | Large soft baits, big jerkbaits, heavy spoons |
Both are labeled medium-heavy and they are not the same rod. This is exactly why the lure rating is the figure to buy on and the power word is not.
Length, and what it buys
Seven feet is the general answer. It casts a heavy bait a long way, it picks line up quickly, and it gives you enough leverage to steer a fish away from the weed bed it is heading for.
Longer — 7 ft 6 in to 8 ft — helps from a bank where you need distance and reach over marginal reeds. It is unwieldy in a boat and worse in a kayak.
Shorter, around 6 ft 6 in, is easier to work a jerkbait with, because the rod tip sweep is what imparts the action and a long rod hits the water.
Guides, and why braid changes them
Both rods here publish Ugly Tuff one-piece stainless guides. That specification matters more on a pike rod than on almost anything else, because pike fishing is braid fishing.
Braid is abrasive and it saws. Guides with a separate insert in a frame can have that insert cut, cracked or worked loose over a season, and a cracked insert then cuts the line. A one-piece stainless guide has no insert to lose.
Our rod guides page covers the trade against lighter insert guides.
The rest of it
The reel goes with it: our pike spinning reels page covers the size and capacity arithmetic, and a wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader is not optional.
Nor is the handling kit. Long pliers, a jaw spreader and a rubber-mesh net, before you catch the first one rather than after. Our pike setup page lists the whole thing.
So what do I actually buy?
Buy on the lure rating, not the power word. If your baits are under 3/4 oz the combo is enough; if they are not, it is not.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best pike rod
Ugly Stik Catfish Spinning Rod (7' Med-Heavy)
Ugly Stik
7 ft medium-heavy, moderate-fast, published at 15-30 lb line and 1/2-3 oz lures on a graphite and fiberglass blank.
The 1/2–3 oz published lure rating is the reason this rod is here. Serious pike baits are heavy — a large soft swimbait or a big jerkbait sits well above an ounce — and a rod rated to 3/4 oz simply will not load with them, as our power and action page works through.
15–30 lb published line rating matches the braid pike anglers actually use, and it means the blank is built to take the load a locked-up hookset puts through it.
Moderate-fast action is the right choice and not a compromise. Pike have hard, bony mouths, which argues for a fast tip, and they shake their heads violently at close range, which argues for a blank that gives. Moderate-fast sits between the two.
It is sold as a catfish rod. The label is about the marketing category, not the blank — the published ratings are exactly what a pike rod needs, and the same is true of the Ugly Tuff one-piece stainless guides, which will not have their inserts cut out by braid.
A rubber gimbal on the butt is published. It is there for a rod holder on a catfish boat and it is harmless for pike, though it will sit oddly against your forearm.
The drawback
It is heavy and it is not sensitive — a graphite and fiberglass blank built for 3 oz lures is not a rod you will feel a soft take on, and pike sometimes take a dead-drifted bait very gently. The rubber gimbal is dead weight for spinning use. Ugly Stik does not publish a rod weight anywhere in the range, which on a rod you cast all day is the figure you want most. And at 15-30 lb line it is over-gunned for anything under about 4 lb, so it is a poor choice on water with lots of small jacks.

2. Best complete pike starter
Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Combo (7' Med-Heavy / size 50)
Ugly Stik
7 ft medium-heavy rod with a size 50 reel at 5.1:1 and 15 lb drag, published at 8-20 lb line and 1/4-3/4 oz lures.
Rod and reel as one purchase, with the reel already sized to the rod. The published 15 lb maximum drag is genuinely enough for pike, which need drag that is smooth rather than drag that is high.
8–20 lb published line rating covers 30 lb braid comfortably, because braid is far thinner than its rating suggests and the rod cares about diameter and load, not the number on the box.
The 1/4–3/4 oz lure rating is the constraint. That covers spinnerbaits, medium jerkbaits, spoons and inline spinners — a large part of pike fishing, and not the heavy end of it.
For someone starting on pike rather than converting a bass setup, this is the cheaper and more sensible entry, and our combo page covers why a matched combo beats two badly-matched pieces.
The drawback
The 3/4 oz lure ceiling rules out the big baits that catch the biggest pike, so this is a setup you may outgrow rather than keep. Two ball bearings is the bare minimum, and it feels like it under load. A 5.1:1 ratio on a size 50 spool is a slow pickup for pike fishing, where you frequently need to move a lot of line quickly. And no separate rod weight, action or blank material is published for the combo's rod.

Questions people actually ask
What rod do I need for pike fishing?
A 7 ft medium-heavy spinning rod covers most pike fishing. Choose it on the published lure rating rather than the power label — the baits you actually throw decide which medium-heavy rod is right.
Is a medium-heavy rod strong enough for pike?
Yes. Power is about the hookset and the lure weight, not about whether the rod can survive the fish. A medium-heavy blank drives a big hook into a bony mouth and casts baits over an ounce.
How long should a pike rod be?
Seven feet as a default. Go to 7 ft 6 in or 8 ft for bank fishing where distance and reach over reeds matter, and down to about 6 ft 6 in if you mainly work jerkbaits, where a long rod hits the water.
Do pike rods need special guides?
They need guides that cope with braid. One-piece stainless guides have no insert to crack or work loose, which is the failure mode that ends up cutting your line on a rod fished with braid all season.
