Combos

The best pike combos: medium-heavy, and buy the leader at the same time

The combo is the easy part. The wire trace on the end is the part people skip and regret.

By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Combo (7' Med-Heavy / size 50)

The short answer

Medium-heavy power at 7 ft. The Ugly Stik GX2 spinning combo publishes 8–20 lb line and 1/4–3/4 oz lures with 15 lb of drag; the Elite casting combo publishes 10–20 lb and 1/4–3/4 oz at 6.5:1. Neither is any use without a wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader on the end.

The leader is not optional

Pike have teeth that will cut braid and fluorocarbon of any sensible diameter. This is the single most common way a beginner loses both the fish and the lure on their first pike trip.

Wire is the certain answer — a 12 to 18 in trace of titanium or seven-strand. It is stiffer and more visible and it does not get bitten through.

Heavy fluorocarbon at 40 to 60 lb is the compromise many pike anglers prefer. It is far less visible, it will eventually get cut, and it is checked and replaced after every fish.

Either connects with a swivel or an FG knot. Our knots page covers the connection, and our pike reels page covers the rest of the terminal end.

If you have never used a baitcaster, buy the spinning combo. If you already own one and get on with it, the casting combo is the better tool for the retrieve rate alone.

Our spinning against baitcasting page works through the general case.

What to throw on it

Within the published 1/4–3/4 oz window, the pike list is short and effective: a large spoon, a big spinnerbait, a jerkbait, and a soft swimbait on a jig head.

Above that window — the 1 oz-plus rubber that catches the biggest fish — you need a dedicated rod rather than a combo. Our pike rods page covers the rods rated to 3 oz that handle it.

The handling kit, bought before the first trip

Long pliers, a rubber-mesh net and something to hold the jaw open. A pike with two trebles in its mouth and your hand nearby is a genuinely bad situation, and it is entirely avoidable.

Our pliers page makes the case that reach is the specification that matters, and our pike setup page lists the whole kit.

So what do I actually buy?

Spinning unless you already cast a baitcaster. Then buy a leader and long pliers in the same order, because you will need both on the first fish.

The picks, in full

Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.

1. Best pike combo

Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Combo (7' Med-Heavy / size 50)

Ugly Stik

7 ft medium-heavy with a size 50 reel, published at 8-20 lb line, 1/4-3/4 oz lures, 5.1:1 and 15 lb of drag.

15 lb of published maximum drag is the figure that matters and it is genuinely enough. A pike fight is short and violent rather than long, and what you need is a drag that starts smoothly under a surge, not one with a high ceiling.

The published 8–20 lb line rating covers 30 lb braid comfortably, because braid is far thinner than its rating suggests — our braid page puts 30 lb at 0.011 in, which is 8 lb mono diameter.

A size 50 spool is large, and spool diameter is what moves line. That matters for pike because you are working big baits back at a steady speed rather than finessing them.

Spinning gear is the right starting point for pike. Casting a 1 oz spoon into a headwind on a baitcaster is how beginners produce backlashes, and our backlash page explains why.

The drawback

The 3/4 oz published lure ceiling rules out the big swimbaits and jerkbaits that catch the largest pike, so this is a setup you can outgrow. Two ball bearings is the bare minimum and it feels like it under load. A 5.1:1 retrieve on a size 50 spool is also slow for pike fishing, where you frequently need to pick up a lot of line quickly.

2. Best for casting heavier baits

Ugly Stik Elite Casting Combo (7' Med-Heavy)

Ugly Stik

7 ft medium-heavy fast at 10-20 lb and 1/4-3/4 oz, with a 6.5:1 reel at 8.5 oz holding 175 yd of 10 lb.

6.5:1 against the spinning combo’s 5.1:1 is the real difference. A faster retrieve lets you fish a spinnerbait or a bladed jig at the speed it was designed to run, and lets you take up slack fast when a pike turns and swims at you.

A published 10–20 lb line rating is a narrower window than the spinning combo’s and it starts higher, which suits pike: you are not fishing light here and you do want something to pull with.

Fast action with medium-heavy power is the combination for driving a big single or treble into a bony mouth. Our power and action page covers why action is about where the rod bends and power is about how much it resists.

8 ball bearings plus a roller and a published 8.5 oz reel weight is a real specification at combo money, and the eight guides plus tip is one more than the Elite spinning rod carries.

The drawback

A baitcaster is the wrong first reel for pike if you have not used one — heavy lures in wind is exactly the situation that produces backlashes, and picking one out with a fish in the net is miserable. Ugly Stik does not publish a maximum drag figure for this combo, which on a pike setup is the number you most want. And at 1/4-3/4 oz it has the same lure ceiling as the spinning combo, so it does not solve the big-bait problem either.

Questions people actually ask

What combo do I need for pike fishing?

A 7 ft medium-heavy set rated to at least 20 lb line and 3/4 oz lures. Spinning if you have not used a baitcaster before; casting if you have, for the faster retrieve.

Do I need a wire leader for pike?

You need a leader of some kind, always. Wire at 12 to 18 in is the certain answer; heavy fluorocarbon at 40 to 60 lb is less visible and must be checked and replaced after every fish.

Is a medium-heavy rod enough for pike?

Yes for lures up to about 3/4 oz, which is most pike fishing. Power is about the hookset and the lure weight rather than the fish, so you only need more rod if you throw bigger baits.

What braid strength for pike on a combo?

Around 30 lb. At 0.011 in it has the diameter of 8 lb mono, so it sits comfortably inside an 8-20 lb published rod rating and fills a size 50 spool properly.
