Wire leaders for pike: the published numbers, and when fluorocarbon is enough

A pike leader is not about strength. It is about the eight inches of line nearest the hook surviving a mouth full of teeth.

The short answer

Use 12 to 18 in of nylon-coated 7x7 wire rated 26 to 40 lb for lures with trebles, and 40 to 60 lb heavy fluorocarbon for single-hook lures in clear water. Wire is not stronger than your line — AFW publishes its 40 lb 7x7 at 0.024 in, which is thicker than 30 lb mono. You are buying bite resistance, and you only need it where the teeth are.

What a pike leader is actually for

A pike has rows of backward-angled teeth and it takes a lure sideways. The line that fails is never the ten yards out in the water — it is the six inches running past the jaw while the fish rolls and shakes.

So a leader is a wear part. It needs to resist being cut, it needs to be short enough not to interfere with the lure, and it needs to be no more visible than it has to be. Break strength is close to irrelevant: a 26 lb wire leader will land every pike in fresh water, and so will a 20 lb one. What matters is whether the teeth go through it.

That reframing resolves the usual argument. The question is not “wire or fluorocarbon” in general. It is: on the specific lure you are about to cast, can a pike get its teeth onto the leader?

The published wire specification

Nylon-coated 7x7 stainless is the standard freshwater pike wire. AFW publishes its Surflon Micro Supreme as a 49-strand 7x7 stainless cable with a nylon coating, in 16.4 ft (5 m) coils, camo colored. These are its published break strengths and diameters.

AFW Surflon Micro Supreme, 7x7 nylon coated — as published
Break strengthDiameter (in)Diameter (mm)Coil
20 lb (9 kg)0.0150.3816.4 ft
26 lb (12 kg)0.0180.4616.4 ft
40 lb (18 kg)0.0240.6116.4 ft
65 lb (30 kg)0.0300.7616.4 ft
90 lb (41 kg)0.0360.9116.4 ft

Read the diameter column against line you already know. The 40 lb wire at 0.024 in is thicker than Berkley publishes for 30 lb Trilene Big Game (0.022 in) and nearly twice the diameter of 30 lb braid. That thickness is the cost of wire, and it is why going heavier than you need is a real penalty rather than free insurance.

Which strength. 26 lb covers pike on this site’s water and is the best compromise on diameter. 40 lb if you fish genuinely big pike or lures over about an ounce, where the extra stiffness also helps stop the leader fouling the hooks on the cast. 65 and 90 lb are saltwater and musky weights.

7x7 against single strand. 7x7 is 49 individual wires laid in seven bundles of seven. It is flexible, it does not kink permanently, and it ties. Single-strand wire is thinner at the same break strength and has to be twisted rather than knotted, and one kink ruins it. For pike, 7x7 coated is the right choice and is what AFW publishes the Micro Supreme as.

Length, and why 12 to 18 inches

A 16.4 ft coil makes roughly ten to fifteen leaders, which is the right way to buy this.

12 in is enough for in-line spinners, spoons and small jerkbaits. The teeth reach maybe four inches past the hook on a pike worth catching, so twelve gives real margin.

18 in for larger baits and for anywhere you might hook a bigger fish. A pike rolling takes more line past its jaw than one swimming away.

Longer than 18 in starts causing problems: it hinges badly on the cast, it sinks a topwater, and it is more visible. This is the one place where more is not better.

Connect it with a small quality snap and swivel rather than tying wire directly to the lure, because wire does not let a lure move freely. Our swivels and snaps page covers which ones fail, and it matters here: a pike leader with a cheap snap on the end is a leader that opens.

When fluorocarbon is genuinely enough

This is where honest advice splits from the received wisdom, and the published numbers make the case.

Seaguar publishes InvizX at 0.016 in for 20 lb. Heavy fluorocarbon leader material in the 40 to 60 lb class is thicker still, and thick fluorocarbon is genuinely abrasion resistant — it is not cut by teeth the way light line is, it is sawn through over repeated contact.

Fluorocarbon works on single-hook lures where the hook sits in the front of the mouth: spinnerbaits, swimbaits on a jig head, single-hook soft plastics. The leader stays outside the teeth, and in clear water the visibility advantage is real.

Fluorocarbon fails on anything with trebles. A treble-hooked crankbait or jerkbait ends up inside the mouth, which puts the leader across the teeth by definition. That is where you lose the fish and leave a lure in it.

The rule, then: trebles get wire, singles can have fluorocarbon. If you are fishing for bass and might hook a pike, a 40 lb fluorocarbon leader is a reasonable compromise. If you are fishing for pike deliberately, with treble-hooked lures, use wire and accept the visibility.

The rest of the pike kit this assumes

A leader is one component, and the other three are not optional on a fish with these teeth.

Long pliers or a hook-out. Bubba publishes its forged pliers at 11 in with carbide cutters. Reaching into a pike’s mouth with short pliers or fingers is how people get hurt, and it is worse for the fish than a quick clean unhooking.

A net big enough. Frabill publishes its Conservation telescoping net at 23 × 26 in on a handle to 60 in. A pike does not fit a trout net and lifting one by the gill plate damages it.

A rod with enough backbone. Our pike rods page makes the medium-heavy case, and pike combos page says the same thing about buying the leader at the same time as the combo. Our complete pike setup puts it together.

Musky is a different problem

If you are fishing musky rather than pike, nothing on this page is heavy enough. Musky teeth go through pike leaders, and our musky rods page covers the point where the gear this site normally recommends stops being sufficient.

For musky-weight leader material: musky-weight leaders.

What we have not told you

We have not bite-tested anything. Every diameter, break strength, strand count and coil length on this page is AFW’s own published figure as listed by the retailer linked below, and the line comparisons use the published figures already on our diameter chart page.

The leader lengths and the trebles-get-wire rule are reasoning from how the fish takes a lure, not from a test we ran. They are also the two things on this page that most pike anglers will already agree with.

We have not featured a ready-made pike leader with snaps attached. They exist, they are convenient and the hardware quality varies more than the wire does: pre-made wire leaders. If you buy them, check the snap, which is the part that fails.

So what do I actually buy?

A coil of 7x7 wire makes a season of leaders for the price of three lures. Buy the 26 or 40 lb, a spool of heavy fluorocarbon for single-hook baits, and the pliers, which are not optional.

Questions people actually ask

Do you need a wire leader for pike?

For lures with treble hooks, yes — a treble-hooked bait ends up inside the mouth, which puts the leader across the teeth. For single-hook lures such as spinnerbaits and jig-head swimbaits, 40 to 60 lb fluorocarbon is enough because the leader stays outside the teeth.

What pound wire leader for pike?

26 lb covers freshwater pike and keeps the diameter down — AFW publishes its 7x7 at 0.018 in for 26 lb. Go to 40 lb (0.024 in) for big pike or lures over an ounce. 65 and 90 lb are musky and saltwater weights.

How long should a pike leader be?

12 in for spinners, spoons and small jerkbaits, and 18 in for larger baits. Longer than 18 in hinges on the cast, sinks topwaters and is more visible — this is one place where more is not better.

Is 7x7 or single strand wire better for pike?

7x7, which AFW publishes as 49 individual wires in seven bundles of seven. It is flexible, it does not take a permanent kink and you can tie it. Single strand is thinner at the same strength but has to be twisted and one kink ruins it.

Can pike bite through fluorocarbon?

Light fluorocarbon, yes. Heavy fluorocarbon in the 40 to 60 lb class resists it well because teeth saw rather than cut at that diameter — but only if the leader stays out of the mouth. That is why the hook type, not the leader material, is the real decision.

Why is my wire leader kinking?

Either it is single-strand rather than 7x7, or you are tying it directly to the lure so it flexes at one point every cast. Use a small quality snap between the wire and the lure, and replace the leader when you see a kink — a kinked wire has already lost strength there.

Will a pike leader put bass off?

A thick wire leader will, in clear water, on finesse presentations. On a spinnerbait or a crankbait it makes very little difference. If you are fishing for bass and might hook a pike, a 40 lb fluorocarbon leader is the compromise worth making.
