Combos

The best walleye combos: medium power, fast tip, and a light bite to feel

A walleye bite is often just weight. The combo you buy decides whether you feel it at all.

By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

Abu Garcia Max Elite Spinning Combo (7' Medium / 3000)

The short answer

Medium or medium-light power with a fast taper. The Abu Garcia Max Elite publishes 7 ft medium fast at 6–12 lb and 3/16–5/8 oz; the 6 ft 10 in medium-light publishes 6–10 lb and 1/8–1/2 oz. Both run a 9+1 bearing reel at under 8 oz, which is what you want on a rod you hold all day.

Why the tip matters more than the power

A walleye does not hit a jig. It swims up, closes its mouth around it, and often keeps swimming in the direction it was already going — frequently toward you.

What you feel is not a knock. It is the jig suddenly weighing slightly more, or slightly less, than it did a second ago. Missing that is the single biggest gap between anglers who catch walleye and anglers who do not.

A fast taper concentrates the flex near the tip, which means small changes in load show up as tip movement rather than being absorbed by the whole blank. Our power and action page covers the mechanics, and our walleye rods page covers the dedicated rods.

Line: 6 or 8 lb, and why braid changes things

Walleye are line-shy in clear water and they live in places that scuff line. 8 lb monofilament is the traditional answer and it is inside both published ratings.

Braid with a fluorocarbon leader is the better choice for jigging specifically, because braid has no stretch and stretch is exactly what hides a soft bite at 25 ft. 10 or 15 lb braid sits inside both ratings by diameter.

The trade is that no stretch also pulls single hooks out of soft mouths, so set the drag lower than instinct says. Our drag page covers doing it against a scale rather than by feel.

Where the combo stops being enough

Two places. Trolling with leadcore or divers needs a heavier rod and a line-counter reel, neither of which is a combo purchase.

And ice. A walleye ice setup is a different rod entirely, and our ice setups page covers it.

For open-water jigging, casting and rigging — which is most walleye fishing — either of these does the job, and our walleye setup page puts the rest of the kit around it.

So what do I actually buy?

The 7 ft medium if you do a bit of everything. The 6 ft 10 in medium-light if you mostly jig.

The picks, in full

Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.

1. Best walleye combo

Abu Garcia Max Elite Spinning Combo (7' Medium / 3000)

Abu Garcia

7 ft medium fast at 6-12 lb and 3/16-5/8 oz, with a 3000 reel at 6.2:1, 9+1 bearings and 7.8 oz.

Seven feet of medium power with a fast taper is the walleye default, and every part of that description is doing work. Medium gives you enough backbone to drive a single hook; the fast taper puts the flex in the last third so the tip telegraphs a soft take.

The published 3/16–5/8 oz lure range covers a 1/4 oz jig, a crankbait and a bottom-bouncer rig at the top end. That is most of walleye fishing in one rating.

Nine ball bearings plus a roller at 7.8 oz on a 3000-size reel is a genuinely good specification at combo money, and the 3000 holds 175 yd of 8 lb — enough for trolling a rig without running short.

6.2:1 is on the fast side, which suits jigging: when a walleye picks the jig up and swims toward you, the whole bite is a moment of nothing, and a fast reel gets the slack out before the fish spits it.

The drawback

Abu Garcia does not publish a maximum drag figure for the combo, and on 6 lb line with a fast rod the drag is doing real work. Seven feet is also awkward in a small boat with two people and four rods, and a fast taper is less forgiving than a moderate one when a walleye shakes its head at the net on a single hook.

2. Best for light jigs and cold water

Abu Garcia Max Elite Spinning Combo (6'10" Med-Light / 2500)

Abu Garcia

6 ft 10 in medium-light fast at 6-10 lb and 1/8-1/2 oz, with a 2500 reel at 6.2:1 and 7.7 oz.

The published 1/8 oz bottom end is the reason to choose this one. Cold-water walleye fishing means small jigs fished slowly, and a rod that will not load with 1/8 oz cannot present one properly.

Medium-light with a fast taper is a more sensitive tool than medium. On a vertical jig in 25 ft of water, what you feel through the blank is the whole game, and the lighter power transmits more of it.

6 ft 10 in is easier to fish vertically over the side of a boat than a full 7 ft rod, and 7.7 oz of reel is the lightest figure on this page.

The 2500 spool holds 175 yd of 8 lb, which is plenty for jigging where you are fishing straight down rather than casting far.

The drawback

The published 1/2 oz lure ceiling rules out heavier bottom-bouncers and deep crankbaits, so this is a jigging rod rather than an all-round walleye rod. 6-10 lb line is also a narrow window if you fish rocky reefs where abrasion is the real risk, and medium-light power is short of backbone for setting a hook at the end of a long troll.

Questions people actually ask

What rod and reel combo is best for walleye?

A 6 ft 10 in to 7 ft rod in medium or medium-light power with a fast taper, on a 2500 or 3000-size reel. The fast tip is what lets you feel a walleye take a jig without knocking it.

Why is a fast action rod better for walleye?

Because a walleye bite is usually a change in weight rather than a knock. A fast taper puts the flex near the tip, so small load changes move the tip instead of being absorbed by the whole blank.

Should I use braid or mono for walleye?

Braid with a fluorocarbon leader for jigging, because there is no stretch to hide a soft bite at depth. Mono at 8 lb is fine for casting and pulling rigs and is more forgiving on single hooks.

What size reel for a walleye combo?

2500 for jigging and 3000 for general work. Both of these combos publish 175 yd of 8 lb, which is more than enough for anything short of trolling with a line counter.
