The best bass rods under $100: what the money actually buys

At this price you are buying a blank and a set of guides. Both are published, and both matter.

Ugly Stik Elite Spinning Rod (7' Medium)

The short answer

A 7 ft medium spinning rod covers most bass fishing. The Ugly Stik Elite publishes 6–14 lb and 1/4–5/8 oz with 35% more graphite than the GX2; the Carbon publishes 6–12 lb and 3/16–5/8 oz. More graphite means more sensitivity and less tolerance for being stood on.

What you actually give up under $100

Not the ratings. All three rods publish line and lure ratings that match rods costing three times as much, and a bass does not know what you paid.

What you give up is weight — none of these publishes one, and all are heavier than a premium blank of the same power — and components, where a more expensive rod gets lighter guides and a better reel seat.

And you give up the last increment of sensitivity. A high-modulus blank transmits more, and on a slow bottom bait in deep water that is a real difference. It is also the difference a beginner is least able to use.

The three, side by side

Published ratings compared
RodLineLureBlank

Ugly Stik Carbon6-12 lb3/16-5/8 ozCarbon
Ugly Stik GX26-15 lb1/8-5/8 ozUgly Tech graphite and fiberglass

Read that table as a sensitivity-against-toughness axis. Carbon at one end, the composite GX2 at the other, the Elite in between — and the lure ratings widening as the blank gets tougher.

Why 7 ft medium is the bass default

Length is casting distance and hook-setting leverage. Seven feet is long enough for both and short enough to control in wind and under docks.

Medium power at roughly 1/4–5/8 oz covers the majority of the bass box: Texas rigs, shaky heads, spinnerbaits, squarebills and small swimbaits. Our technique matrix page maps the exceptions.

Medium-heavy is the second rod, for jigs, frogs and heavy cover. Our bass rods page covers the full range, and this page is specifically about what is available under a hundred dollars.

Spinning or casting at this price

Spinning, for a first bass rod. A casting rod needs a baitcaster, a baitcaster needs practice, and a bad first afternoon puts people off.

Once you can cast one, the second rod should be a medium-heavy casting rod for jigs and frogs. Our baitcasting rods page covers that step.

Where to spend the money you saved

Fresh line, every season. It does more for a setup than any rod upgrade at this price, and our spinning line page covers what to spool.

Then a reel that publishes its figures. Our spinning reels under $100 page covers the partner for any of these rods.

So what do I actually buy?

The Elite if you want one rod. The Carbon if you fish bottom baits and look after your gear. The GX2 if the rod is going in a kayak or on a bank.

The picks, in full

Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.

1. Best bass rod under $100

Ugly Stik Elite Spinning Rod (7' Medium)

Ugly Stik

7 ft medium fast, published at 6-14 lb and 1/4-5/8 oz, with 35% more graphite than the GX2 and a 15 1/2 in cork handle.

The published “35% more graphite than GX2” is a stated construction difference rather than marketing language, and it is what you are paying for. More graphite in the blend means a stiffer, lighter blank that transmits more of what the lure is doing.

Fast action with medium power at 1/4–5/8 oz is the bass window. It sets a hook on a Texas rig at distance, it casts a spinnerbait, and it has enough tip to fish a squarebill without ripping it away from fish.

A 15 1/2 in premium cork rear grip is published, which is long enough for two-handed casting. On a 7 ft rod that adds real distance and takes strain off one wrist across a day.

Seven guides plus a tip in PVD-coated Ugly Tuff one-piece stainless. One-piece guides have no insert to crack or pop out, which is the failure that ends up cutting braid. Our guides page covers the trade against lighter insert guides.

The drawback

More graphite also means more brittleness — the Elite is markedly less tolerant of being leaned on a gate or trodden on in a boat than the GX2, and it is a one-piece rod so it travels badly. Ugly Stik does not publish a rod weight for it, which on a rod sold partly on being lighter is the figure you most want to check.

2. Best for feel on bottom baits

Ugly Stik Carbon Spinning Rod (7' Medium)

Ugly Stik

7 ft medium fast on a carbon blank, published at 6-12 lb and 3/16-5/8 oz with 7 guides plus tip.

The published 3/16 oz bottom end is lower than the Elite’s 1/4 oz, and that matters for finesse. A 3/16 oz shaky head is a genuinely common bass bait and a rod that will not load with it presents it badly.

A carbon blank rather than a graphite and fiberglass blend is the headline. Carbon is stiffer for its weight, so more of what happens at the lure reaches your hand — which is the whole point on a bait you are dragging along the bottom feeling for a change in texture.

6–12 lb line rating is narrower than the Elite’s and it is the right window for finesse work with fluorocarbon.

Ugly Tuff one-piece stainless guides again, so the braid durability is the same as the Elite’s.

The drawback

A carbon blank is the easiest rod on this page to break. Carbon does not tolerate a knock against a boat gunwale or a car door the way a composite blank does, and the 12 lb line ceiling is limiting if you fish heavy cover and need to pull rather than play. It is also the least forgiving rod here on treble-hooked baits, where a stiff blank pulls hooks.

3. Best value, and the one that survives

Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Rod (7' Medium, 4-piece)

Ugly Stik

7 ft medium four-piece, published at 6-15 lb and 1/8-5/8 oz on a graphite and fiberglass blank.

6–15 lb published line rating is the widest here, and the extra headroom is real: it means you can fish 15 lb fluorocarbon around laydowns and pull rather than play.

1/8–5/8 oz is also the widest lure window on the page. One rod that casts a 1/8 oz Ned rig and a 5/8 oz spinnerbait is a genuinely useful thing to own.

Published as four pieces, which is the specification nobody values until they break a one-piece rod in a car door. Our one-piece against two-piece page covers what the joint costs.

The graphite and fiberglass blend is tough rather than sensitive, and that is the right trade on a rod that lives in a kayak or gets laid on gravel. Our blank materials page works through why.

The drawback

It is the least sensitive rod on this page by a clear margin, and on bottom baits you will feel less of what is happening. Ugly Stik publishes no action rating and no rod weight for it. The two-piece joint is also a stiffness discontinuity you can feel in the cast, which is the price of the portability.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best bass rod under $100?

A 7 ft medium spinning rod with a fast action. The Ugly Stik Elite publishes 6-14 lb and 1/4-5/8 oz with a stated 35% more graphite than the GX2, which is the best balance of feel and durability at this price.

What do you give up on a bass rod under $100?

Weight and components, not ratings. The published line and lure ratings match far dearer rods; what you lose is a lighter blank, better guides and the last increment of sensitivity.

Is a carbon rod worth it for bass?

For bottom baits, yes — a carbon blank transmits more of what the lure is doing. It is also the easiest rod to break, so it is the wrong choice for a kayak or a rocky bank.

What length and power bass rod should I buy first?

7 ft, medium power, fast action, in spinning. It covers Texas rigs, shaky heads, spinnerbaits and squarebills, and it is far easier to learn on than a baitcaster.
