Setups

A family fishing setup: four people, one tackle box, nothing complicated

Taking three other people fishing is not four times the gear. It is a different problem, and most of it is about tangles.

A small fishing pond

The short answer

Spincast combos for anyone who cannot cast yet, one light spinning combo for anyone who can, slip bobbers so bites are visible, and a single shared tackle box. Plan for untangling, not for catching. The day ends when the adult runs out of patience, not when the fish stop.

  1. 1. Rods for beginners
Zebco 33 Classic Spincast Rod and Reel Combo (5 ft 6 in)

Zebco 33 Classic Spincast Rod and Reel Combo (5 ft 6 in)

    $74.99

5 ft 6 in, published 6-12 lb and 1/8-1/2 oz, with a closed-face reel at 3.6:1. The closed face is the point: press a button and let go. Nothing loops off the spool, so nobody needs rescuing every third cast.

Thill Pro Series Slip Bobber Float

Thill Pro Series Slip Bobber Float

    $4.78

Premium balsa with a brass grommet, published in 7/8 in and 1 in. A float turns an invisible bite into something a six-year-old can see from ten feet away, which is most of what keeps them interested.

    Berkley Trilene XL Monofilament Line

    $8.97

8 lb at a published 0.010 in on every rod. One line for everything means one spare spool to carry, and 8 lb is heavy enough that a snagged rig usually comes back rather than breaking off.

We do not print a running total here. Every one of these prices moves independently, and a total we typed last week would be wrong today — check the five current prices above and add them up, which takes about twenty seconds and is always right.

The problem is not the fishing

If you fish on your own, your gear is chosen to catch fish. Taking a family out is a different optimization: the constraint is your own attention, and everything should be chosen to consume less of it.

A realistic hour with two children and one adult involves some fishing, a lot of retying, at least one tangle that cannot be saved, a dropped rod, and a snack. The gear choices below are all aimed at the parts that are not fishing.

Our kids combos page covers choosing a single rod for a child. This page is about the whole group.

Match the reel to the caster, not to the fish

Which reel for whom
WhoReel typeWhy
Under about eightSpincast, closed faceOne button. Cannot produce a wind knot
Older child, first timeSpincastCasting is learned in a minute rather than an afternoon
Older child, done it beforeLight spinningThey will outgrow spincast quickly and know it
Adult supervisingWhatever you ownYou will spend more time untangling than casting anyway

The split matters because a spinning reel in the hands of someone who cannot yet use one produces a wind knot roughly every fifth cast, and each one costs you five to ten minutes. Four of those and the trip is over. Our spincast against spinning page is honest about what you give up in exchange.

Fish with bobbers, even if you never would

A slip bobber does three things for a group that matter more than catching efficiency.

It makes the bite visible. A child cannot feel a bluegill mouth a worm, and telling them to watch for a twitch in the line does not work. A float going under is unmistakable and it is the moment they remember.

It sets the depth for them. With a stop on the line the bait fishes at a known depth every cast, so nobody is dragging a hook along the bottom collecting weed.

And it stops the rig sinking into snags while nobody is watching, which on a busy bank is most of the time. Our bobbers page explains why the slip version is a tool and the fixed clip-on kind is a toy.

One box, carried by one person

Give four people four tackle boxes and you will end the day with four open boxes, three lost lids and hooks in the grass.

One two-tier box with adjustable compartments, carried by the adult, is the whole tackle system. Hooks, split shot, bobber stops, a few small jigs and spare floats. That is it.

Our organizing page argues for sorting by technique rather than by lure type, and for a family day the technique is one: a bait under a float.

Target panfish and nothing else

This is the single most useful decision on the page. Bluegill and other panfish are abundant, they are willing, they are close to the bank, and they bite all day.

Bass fishing with children is a recipe for four hours of nothing. Catfishing means sitting still, which works for some children and not for most. Panfish means a fish every few minutes, which is what everyone actually came for.

Our bluegill baits page covers what to put on the hook, and the short answer is a small piece of worm on a small hook.

Bring more of the boring things

Spare line, spare hooks, spare floats, and more split shot than seems sensible. Every one of those is a thing that can end a rod’s day, and a rod that is out of action is a child with nothing to do.

Also: pliers for hook removal, because unhooking a bluegill with fingers goes badly. Our pliers page covers size, and the shorter one is right for panfish.

A landing net is genuinely useful with children, for the simple reason that a fish flapping on the bank is a fish that gets dropped.

Sun and safety, briefly

A day on open water is a lot of sun exposure for everyone, and children burn faster. Hats and long sleeves do more than sunscreen you have to remember to reapply — our sun protection page covers the case.

If any part of the day is on a boat or a dock over deep water, everyone wears a PFD. Our PFD page makes the argument that the one you wear is the one that works, and with children there is no version of this worth negotiating.

Questions people actually ask

What fishing gear do I need to take my family fishing?

Spincast combos for anyone who cannot cast, one light spinning combo for anyone who can, slip bobbers so bites are visible, one shared tackle box, and far more spare hooks and line than you think.

What is the best fish to target with kids?

Panfish. Bluegill are abundant, close to the bank, willing all day and easy to catch. Bass fishing with young children usually means four hours of nothing, which ends the day early.

Should children use a spincast or spinning reel?

Spincast under about eight, or for any first-timer. The closed face cannot produce a wind knot, so you spend the day fishing instead of untangling. Move to light spinning once they can cast reliably.

Why use a bobber when fishing with kids?

It makes the bite visible, which a child cannot feel through the rod; it holds the bait at a set depth; and it stops the rig sinking into snags while nobody is watching.

How many tackle boxes should we bring?

One, carried by an adult. Four boxes among four people becomes four open boxes and hooks in the grass. A two-tier box with adjustable compartments holds everything a family day needs.
