The short answer
At 0.011 inches you can have 12 lb mono, 12 lb fluorocarbon, or 30 lb braid. That single comparison, from three published diameter charts, explains most of what separates the three. Braid wins on strength-per-diameter and sensitivity; mono wins on stretch and forgiveness; fluorocarbon wins on invisibility and sink rate.

Reading it: same diameter, three choices
Turn the table around and look at it by diameter rather than by test. This is the version that actually informs a decision.

At 0.011 inches, braid gives you three times the strength of mono. At 0.016 inches, it gives you more than three times. That is not marketing; it is two published charts placed next to each other.
The second thing this view makes obvious: fluorocarbon and mono are effectively the same diameter at the same test. The idea that fluorocarbon is meaningfully thinner does not survive the published numbers.

Stretch is the property that decides most situations
Mono’s stretch sounds like a weakness and is often a feature.
Where stretch helps: treble-hook baits. A crankbait hangs off two or three small trebles in soft mouth tissue. When the fish surges beside the boat, no-stretch braid transmits that surge straight to the hooks and tears them out. Mono absorbs it.
Where stretch hurts: single hooks buried in plastic. A Texas rig needs the hook point driven through the worm and into the jaw. On a long cast with mono, a meaningful fraction of that hookset disappears into line stretch.
That single distinction — treble hooks versus single hooks — predicts the right line more reliably than species, water clarity or depth.
The braid-plus-leader setup, and why it is standard
Braid’s weakness is visibility; fluorocarbon’s weakness is cost and diameter. Joining them fixes both.
Spool 20–30 lb braid as your main line. Tie on two to four feet of 10–15 lb fluorocarbon as a leader. You get braid’s thin diameter, sensitivity and capacity on the spool, and fluorocarbon’s invisibility and sink rate where the fish is looking.
The cost is one knot, joining two dissimilar lines. The FG knot is the strongest and the fiddliest; a double uni is easier and adequate. Either takes an evening to learn and then takes ninety seconds on the water.
Note the diameters make this practical: 30 lb braid at 0.011 in joined to 12 lb fluorocarbon at 0.011 in is a knot between two lines of identical thickness, which is exactly the condition under which line-to-line knots behave well.
Which should you actually buy?
Your first spool: 10 lb mono. Forgiving in every way that matters while you are learning, and cheap enough to replace when you inevitably wreck it.
Your second: braid with a fluorocarbon leader, once your casting is consistent and you want to feel what is happening at the lure.
Straight fluorocarbon: a specialist choice for clear water and finesse presentations. It is stiff, expensive and unforgiving to knot, and it is not where a first spool of line should go.
So what do I actually buy?
Most people should own all three eventually, and in this order: mono to learn on, braid as the main-line upgrade, fluorocarbon as the leader that makes braid usable in clear water.

Questions people actually ask
What is the difference between braid, fluorocarbon and mono?
They are three different materials. Braid is many fibers braided together — no stretch, very thin for its strength, highly visible. Fluorocarbon is a single strand with a refractive index close to water — low visibility, sinks fast, low stretch. Mono is nylon — stretchy, floats, cheapest, most forgiving to knot.
Is braid the same diameter as mono?
No, it is far thinner for the same strength. Power Pro publishes 30 lb braid at 0.011 in, which is the same diameter as 12 lb Trilene XL mono. At any given diameter braid gives you roughly three times the strength.
Is fluorocarbon thinner than mono?
Barely. Published charts put 12 lb Seaguar InvizX at 0.011 in and 12 lb Trilene XL at 0.013 in — a difference of 0.002 in. Fluorocarbon's real advantages are low visibility and a fast sink rate, not diameter.
Why use a fluorocarbon leader with braid?
Braid is highly visible and floats; fluorocarbon is nearly invisible and sinks. Joining two to four feet of fluorocarbon to a braid main line gives you braid's thin diameter and sensitivity on the spool with fluorocarbon's invisibility where the fish is looking.
Should I use braid or mono for crankbaits?
Mono. Crankbaits hang off small treble hooks in soft mouth tissue, and braid's zero stretch transmits a fish's surge straight to those hooks and tears them out. Mono's stretch absorbs it. The rule generalizes: treble hooks want stretch, single hooks want none.
