Tackle

The best plastic worms for bass, by the length you actually need

One bag of worms catches more bass than a tackle box of hard baits. The only real decision is the length.

By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

Zoom Trick Worm

The short answer

Buy one bag of 6.5 in Zoom Trick Worms in watermelon seed. That is the answer for almost everybody. Add a 5 in Senko when you want a horizontal fall, a 6 in Roboworm when the bite is tough and you are drop shotting, and a 9 or 10 in worm only when you are specifically hunting a bigger fish in heavy cover.

Reel & Rig earns a commission from qualifying purchases made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which gear we pick or what we say about it. Full disclosure.

The pack counts are the figures worth reading twice. Twenty 6.5 in Trick Worms against eight 10 in Power Worms is a three-to-one difference in baits per bag, and soft plastics are a consumable.

Length, by what you are doing

2.75 to 4 in. Finesse. Ned rig, drop shot, small wacky rig, and the answer when fish are pressured or the water is very clear. Our shaky head against Ned rig page is the comparison that matters down here.

4.5 to 7 in. Everything else. This is where the Trick Worm, the Senko and the 6 in Roboworm live, and it is where the overwhelming majority of bass are caught on plastic.

9 to 10 in. Big-fish bags. Summer, heavy cover, and a deliberate decision to get fewer bites from better fish. Needs a heavier rod and hook than the rest of this page.

Hook and weight, in one table

Published hook sizing for soft plastics is covered in full on our hooks page. This is the short version for the worms here.

Worm length to hook and weight
Worm lengthOffset worm hookBullet weight
4 to 5 in3/0None to 1/4 oz
6 to 7 in3/0 to 4/03/16 to 3/8 oz
9 to 10 in4/0 to 5/03/8 to 1/2 oz

Weightless is a legitimate option in all three rows and the most underused presentation in bass fishing. No weight, a slack line and a worm falling on its own catches fish that everything else has spooked.

Color, briefly, because it matters less than length

Two colors cover almost everything: a green pumpkin or watermelon for clear and moderately clear water, and a black or junebug for stained water and low light. Our lure color page makes the full argument.

The exception is finesse worms in very clear water, where Roboworm’s 54 published colors exist for a reason. Even there, three is plenty.

What is not on this page, and why

Creature baits and craws. Different category, different job. Our creature baits page covers the bulky, appendage-heavy plastics for flipping cover.

Swimbaits. A paddle tail swims on the retrieve rather than falling, which makes it a search bait rather than a worm. Our swimbaits page covers those.

Pre-rigged worms. The harness-and-double-hook worms sold ready to fish are genuinely effective for beginners and genuinely limited afterwards. If you want one: pre-rigged worms.

Testing. We have not tested any of these. Every figure above is the manufacturer’s or retailer’s published specification, linked below, and the length-to-hook table is the standard pairing these baits are sold against rather than a result we produced.

So what do I actually buy?

If you buy one bag, buy the Trick Worm. If you buy three, add a Senko and a Roboworm — one for the fall, one for the tough days. The big worms are a fourth purchase, not a first.

The picks, in full

Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.

1. Best first bag

Zoom Trick Worm

Zoom

Published 6.5 in, 20 per pack, salt impregnated, made in the USA. Texas, Carolina, wacky or weightless.

Twenty worms at 6.5 in in a bag, which is the highest count-per-dollar on this page and the reason this is where to start. Zoom publishes it for Texas rigs, Carolina rigs, wacky rigs and weightless, which is to say every soft-plastic presentation this site covers.

6.5 in is the length that works on the widest range of water. It is big enough that a four-pound bass takes it without hesitation and small enough that a one-pound bass can get it in. Our hooks page puts a 5 in worm on a 3/0 or 4/0 offset hook; at 6.5 in you are at the top of the 4/0 range.

Salt impregnated, published, which does two things: it adds weight so the worm casts and sinks on its own, and it is what makes fish hold on a second longer than they would on an unsalted plastic.

The weightless presentation is the one most people miss. No weight, a 3/0 offset hook, cast it past cover and let it fall on a slack line. Our rigging page walks through the hook placement that keeps it weedless.

The drawback

At 6.5 in it is too long for genuinely tough conditions and too short for a dedicated big-fish bag, so it is the compromise length rather than the best length for any one job. Zoom publishes no scent formula for it beyond the salt, so if you fish dirty water where scent matters, the Berkley worm below has a published advantage. Twenty thin worms in a bag also tangle into a single mass if you leave them loose in a tray.

2. Best for the fall

Gary Yamamoto Senko

Gary Yamamoto

Published in 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 in, 10 per pack to 5 in, heavily salted for a horizontal fall and shimmy.

The Senko is on this page for one published property: a horizontal fall with a side-to-side shimmy, weightless. Almost every other worm falls head-down. This one falls flat, quivering, and bass eat it on the way down.

Yamamoto publishes five lengths. 5 in is the one to own — 10 per pack — with 4 in for clear water or heavy pressure and 6 or 7 in (5 per pack) when you want a bigger profile. Our wacky rig page is the presentation it is most associated with, and the hook through the middle is the entire technique.

Heavily salt impregnated, published. That is what makes a cylinder of plastic with no appendages cast like a lure and fall at the right speed. It is also why a Senko is noticeably heavier in the hand than a Trick Worm of the same length.

The honest case for owning both: a Trick Worm is the better Texas rig and a Senko is the better weightless fall. They are not substitutes.

The drawback

Senkos tear. The salt content that makes them fall correctly also makes the plastic soft, and a wacky-rigged Senko often lasts one or two fish — the O-ring trick exists because of this. They are also the most expensive worm here per bait, especially in the 6 and 7 in lengths where the pack drops to five. Yamamoto publishes no scent formula beyond the salt.

3. Best for a tough bite

Roboworm Straight Tail Worm (6 in, 10 pack)

Roboworm

Published 4.5 and 6 in, 10 per pack, 54 colors, made in the USA. Sold specifically for drop shot and finesse.

Roboworm publishes two lengths, 4.5 and 6 in, and publishes them for drop shot and finesse techniques specifically. It is a thin, straight, almost featureless worm, and that is the point: in clear water with pressured fish, the bait that does least often gets bitten most.

Fifty-four published colors is the other reason it is here, and it is not vanity. Finesse fishing is the one place where small color changes genuinely change a bite, and Roboworm’s laminate and translucent colors are the reason the brand exists. Our lure color page argues you need far fewer colors than you think — this is the exception it names.

The pairing is a drop shot rig, which our drop shot page covers in full: hook above the weight, nose-hooked worm, dead still. A 6 in Roboworm nose-hooked on a size 1 drop shot hook is the single most reliable way to catch a bass that will not eat anything else.

Made in the USA, published, and 10 per pack.

The drawback

This is a finesse bait and it fishes like one — thin plastic on a small hook, so it tears quickly and it is the wrong choice in heavy cover where you need to pull a fish out. Ten per pack is the smallest count here, so the per-bait cost is high for something you lose to small fish. And it is genuinely a specialist: on an average day, a Trick Worm catches more.

4. Best big worm

Zoom Magnum II Worm (9 in, 20 pack)

Zoom

Published 9 in, 20 per pack, salt impregnated, for a Texas rig in heavy cover.

Nine inches, twenty in a bag. Zoom publishes it specifically for “when water temperatures heat up and fishing pressure begins to take its toll,” Texas rigged, flipping and pitching into heavy cover.

That is a real summer pattern and not marketing. In August, in thick vegetation or around laydowns, the bass worth catching have seen every 6 in worm in the lake. A nine inch worm is a different proposition, and it selects for size: small bass largely leave it alone.

Zoom publishes it as super soft to the touch, which matters at this length — a stiff nine inch worm does not have the right action and a fish does not hold a stiff bait long enough to get the hook in. Salt impregnated too.

Rig it on a 4/0 or 5/0 offset hook with a 3/8 to 1/2 oz bullet weight pegged. Our Texas against Carolina page covers why you peg the weight in cover and not in open water.

The drawback

Twenty per pack is generous but you will throw a nine inch worm far less often than a 6.5 in one, so it is the bag most likely to sit unused for a year. The length also demands more hook and more weight than a light spinning setup can handle — this is a medium-heavy baitcaster bait, which rules it out for anyone fishing the first real setup this site is written for. Zoom publishes no country of manufacture for it on the page we read.

5. Best scented worm

Berkley PowerBait Power Worm (10 in, 8 pack)

Berkley

Published 10 in (25 cm), 8 per pack, PowerBait scent-and-flavor formula, ribbon tail.

Ten inches with a ribbon tail, on Berkley’s PowerBait scent-and-flavor formula. It is the only worm on this page with a published scent system rather than just salt, and that is the reason to own it.

Scent earns its place in two conditions. Stained or muddy water, where a bass finds the bait by smell and vibration rather than sight. And cold water, where fish inspect a bait for a long time before committing and anything that keeps them holding on helps.

The ribbon tail is the second difference. A straight worm falls and sits; a ribbon tail swims on the drop and flutters on a lift, which gives you something to fish on a slow retrieve rather than only on the bottom. Berkley publishes it for pitching and flipping heavy cover.

Eight per pack, which is the smallest count here and reflects the size. Our winter bass lures page is the other place scent comes up on this site.

The drawback

Eight baits per pack at 10 in is the thinnest value on this page, and PowerBait plastics are soft enough that a pack does not last long in cover. The scent is also messy: it leaches, it transfers to everything in the tray, and it will ruin other plastics stored next to it — our line and lure storage page exists partly for this. Berkley publishes no country of manufacture.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best plastic worm for bass?

A 6.5 in Zoom Trick Worm, in watermelon seed or green pumpkin. Twenty per published pack, salt impregnated, and Zoom publishes it for Texas, Carolina, wacky and weightless rigs — which covers nearly every soft plastic presentation in freshwater bass fishing.

What size plastic worm should I use?

6 to 7 in for general fishing, 4 to 5 in when fish are pressured or the water is clear, and 9 to 10 in only when you are deliberately hunting a bigger fish in heavy cover. Length matters more than color or brand.

What hook do I need for a plastic worm?

An offset worm hook: 3/0 for a 4 to 5 in worm, 3/0 to 4/0 for 6 to 7 in, and 4/0 to 5/0 for 9 to 10 in. Our hooks page covers why worm hook sizes work the way they do.

What is the difference between a Senko and a Trick Worm?

How they fall. Yamamoto publishes the Senko for a horizontal fall with a side-to-side shimmy, which is why it is fished weightless and wacky rigged. A Trick Worm is thinner and more versatile — better Texas rigged — but it does not fall flat.

Do plastic worms need scent?

Not usually. Salt impregnation, which Zoom and Yamamoto both publish, does most of the work. Scent earns its place in stained water and cold water, which is where Berkley's published PowerBait formula is worth the softer plastic.

What color plastic worm should I buy?

Green pumpkin or watermelon for clear water and black or junebug for stained water. That is two bags and it covers almost every condition. Finesse worms in very clear water are the one place extra colors genuinely change the bite.

How many plastic worms do I need in a tackle box?

Two bags and two hook sizes is a complete worm system. Store them in their original bags inside a tray — scented plastics leach and will damage other soft baits stored loose beside them.
