The best bass lures for winter: slow down, or go down
In cold water a bass will not chase. Every lure here either hangs in front of it or falls slowly past its nose.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
A suspending jerkbait published at 4–6 ft is the winter bait, because it stops and stays put. Back it up with a lipless you can count down to deep fish, a tube dragged on rock, and a shakey head from 1/8 oz for days when nothing will move at all.

Why winter needs different lures
A bass is cold-blooded. In cold water its metabolism slows, it needs far less food, and it becomes unwilling to move any real distance for a meal.
That single fact explains every lure on this page. None of them asks a fish to chase. The jerkbait stops dead in front of it, the lipless falls past it, the tube crawls at walking pace, and the shakey head stands still and wobbles.
| Lure | Published depth or class | Weight | What triggers the bite |
|---|---|---|---|
| X-Rap 10 | 4-6 ft, suspending | 7/16 oz | The pause |
| Red Eye Shad | Sinking, any depth | 1/4 to 3/4 oz | The fall after a rip |
| Berkley Power Tube | Bottom contact | Head weight of your choice | Constant tentacle movement |
| Tour Grade Shakey Head | Bottom, standing up | 1/8, 3/16, 1/4 oz | A bait that will not go away |
The pause is the technique
If you take one thing from this page: in cold water, whatever you are doing, do it more slowly and then stop for longer.
On a suspending jerkbait that means a pause of five to fifteen seconds between twitches. It feels absurd. It is also where the overwhelming majority of winter jerkbait bites come from, and anglers who catch fish in February are almost always the ones pausing longest.
The same applies to the tube and the shakey head. A retrieve that feels too slow to be fishing is usually about right.
Water clarity splits the four
Clear water: the jerkbait, by a distance. Bass can see it from a long way off and will come to it, which is the only situation in winter where a fish moves any distance.
Stained water: the lipless. A bass finds it by vibration rather than by sight, which is why the bait works when visibility does not.
Either: the bottom baits. A tube or a shakey head dragged across rock is found by feel and by scent as much as by sight.
Our lure color page covers the clarity question without asking you to own forty colors of everything.
Winter is when line choice starts to matter
Cold water is usually clearer, bass have longer to inspect a bait, and bites are subtle enough that you may not feel a heavy line move.
This is the season where fluorocarbon earns its money, both for its lower visibility and because it sinks — which helps a suspending jerkbait stay down. Our fluorocarbon page covers when it is worth the cost, and our line matrix covers the rest.
Going lighter also helps. A 1/8 oz shakey head on 15 lb line does not fish properly; on 8 lb it does.
Where the fish actually are
Winter bass concentrate. They are not spread across the lake the way they are in spring, and finding them is most of the work.
Look for steep banks, bluff ends, deep points and channel bends — places where a fish can change depth without swimming far. Rock holds warmth and is worth more than wood in winter. Our fish finder guide is more useful in winter than in any other season, because a lake that looks empty usually is, apart from two or three spots.
The upside is that when you find one you have usually found several.
So what do I actually buy?
If you buy one winter lure, make it the suspending jerkbait. If your water is stained, make it the lipless instead.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best winter bait overall
Rapala X-Rap 10 Jerkbait
Rapala
4 in, 7/16 oz, published 4-6 ft, suspending, stainless through-wire, VMC trebles, flash feather tail.
Published as suspending is the specification that makes this the cold-water lure. Twitch it twice, then stop — and it hangs there, at depth, not rising and not sinking. A lethargic bass that will not chase will often eat something that simply refuses to leave.
The pause is the whole technique, and in genuinely cold water it wants to be far longer than feels reasonable. Ten seconds is not unusual. Most people fish a jerkbait far too quickly in winter.
4–6 ft published running depth puts it in the zone where winter bass suspend over deeper water, which is not the same as sitting on the bottom.
The flash feather teaser on the tail is published, and it moves on the pause when nothing else is moving. Stainless through-wire construction is published too, which matters when a pike takes it. Our jerkbaits page covers the category.
The drawback
Three sets of exposed trebles make this a genuinely bad choice anywhere near cover, and cold-water bass are often relating to wood. It works best in clear water, so on a stained lake it is the wrong tool. And at 7/16 oz with a long-cast system it needs some room — it is not a lure for a tight bank swim.

2. Best for deep winter fish
Strike King Red Eye Shad Lipless Crankbait
Strike King
Four published weights from 1/4 oz at 2 in to 3/4 oz at 3 in, sinking, no set running depth.
Because it sinks and publishes no running depth, you choose the depth. In winter that is the point — fish sit deeper and you need to reach them, and counting a lipless down is the simplest way to fish 20 ft with a hard bait.
The yo-yo retrieve is the cold-water presentation: let it fall, lift it sharply, let it fall again. Almost every bite comes on the fall, which is exactly what a bass that will not chase is willing to do.
Over deep grass it is unmatched. Wind until it catches in the weed, snap it free, and the sudden break plus the fall triggers strikes. Nothing with a bill fishes grass that way.
Four published weights let you match the sink rate to the depth: 3/4 oz for 20 ft, 1/4 oz over shallow grass. Our lipless page covers fishing a bait with no bill.
The drawback
Exposed trebles again, and winter fish on rock and wood mean snags. There is no strike-triggering deflection design, so in hard cover the squarebill is the better tool. Strike King publishes no hook size and no sound specification, so you are choosing by weight and nothing else.

3. Best on rock
Berkley PowerBait Power Tube (3.5 in)
Berkley
3 1/2 in, 8 per pack, published as a hollow body in Berkley's PowerBait scent-and-flavor formula.
Dragged slowly across rock is one of the highest-percentage cold-water presentations there is, particularly for smallmouth. The tentacles move constantly even when the bait is barely moving, which is exactly what you want when the retrieve has to be almost nothing.
It is published as infused with Berkley’s PowerBait scent-and-flavor formula. The claim made for a scent is that a fish holds on a fraction longer, which would matter more in cold water than warm — a bass has longer to inspect a bait before deciding, and a bait it holds onto for an extra second is a bait you hook. That is the claim, not a result we have measured.
3.5 in and 10 per pack is the standard size, published as working on light line and spinning tackle as well as Texas rigged and flipped.
Our tube baits page covers the two ways to rig one, and the internal jig head is the one for dragging on rock.
The drawback
This is slow, methodical fishing and covering water with it is not realistic — you are working a rock bank at walking pace. It is much more a smallmouth bait than a largemouth one. Strike King publishes no recommended jig head weight, so you are matching the head to the depth by trial.

4. Best when nothing works
Strike King Tour Grade Shakey Head
Strike King
1/8, 3/16 and 1/4 oz published, 60-degree flat-eye Gamakatsu hook, barb to stand the bait up.
The published head design stands the worm up off the bottom with the head resting on it. A bass sitting on the bottom in cold water sees a bait standing vertically in front of its face, and that is a very difficult thing for it to ignore.
1/8 oz published as the lightest option is what makes this a genuine finesse presentation. Lighter is slower, slower is better in cold water, and 1/8 oz is about as slow as you can fish and still feel the bottom.
The 60-degree flat-eye Gamakatsu hook and a barb to hold the plastic are published. A bait that slides down the hook stops standing up, so the barb is doing real work.
Pair it with a finesse worm and fish it on a light spinning setup. Our jig heads page covers how the head shape changes the behavior of the plastic.
The drawback
It is the slowest fishing on this page and it demands patience most people do not have on a cold day. Three per pack painted is a small quantity for a jig head you will lose on rock. And a 1/8 oz head on light line needs a sensitive rod to feel at all — on a medium-heavy bass rod you will not know what is happening.

Questions people actually ask
What is the best bass lure for cold water?
A suspending jerkbait. Because it neither rises nor sinks on the pause, it hangs in front of a lethargic bass, and that is the presentation cold-water fish will commit to when they will not chase.
How long should you pause a jerkbait in winter?
Far longer than feels right — five to fifteen seconds between twitches is normal in genuinely cold water. Most winter jerkbait bites come on the pause, and fishing it too fast is the commonest mistake.
Do bass feed in winter?
Yes, but much less. A bass is cold-blooded, so in cold water its metabolism slows and it will not move far for food. Lures that stop, fall slowly or crawl work; lures that ask a fish to chase do not.
Where do bass go in winter?
They concentrate on steep banks, bluff ends, deep points and channel bends, where they can change depth without swimming far. Rock holds warmth and is generally better than wood in cold water.
What line should I use for winter bass fishing?
Fluorocarbon is worth the money in winter: it is less visible in clearer cold water and it sinks, which helps keep a suspending jerkbait down. Going lighter also lets finesse baits fish properly.
