The best crappie combos: light power, and a rod long enough to reach
Crappie jigs weigh almost nothing. The lure rating on the box is the only number that decides whether you can cast one.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
Buy light or medium-light power with a lure rating that starts at 1/8 oz or below. The Abu Garcia Max Elite publishes 6 ft 10 in medium-light at 1/8–1/2 oz; the Ugly Stik GX2 publishes 5 ft light at the same lure rating. A 1/16 oz jig will not load a medium rod, and that is the whole problem.

The lure rating is the whole decision
A crappie jig is usually 1/16 oz, sometimes 1/32 oz, occasionally 1/8 oz. A 1/16 oz jig weighs about 1.8 grams.
A rod only casts when the lure loads the blank, and a rod rated from 1/4 oz — roughly 7 grams — will not feel 1.8 grams at all. You end up flipping the jig twenty feet and blaming yourself.
| Combo | Length | Power | Lure rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max Elite 2500 | 6 ft 10 in | Medium light | 1/8-1/2 oz |
| GX2 size 25 | 5 ft | Light | 1/8-1/2 oz |
| A typical medium combo | 6 ft 6 in | Medium | 1/8-5/8 oz |
Note that the published bottom end is 1/8 oz on all three. If you fish 1/16 oz jigs — and most crappie anglers do — you are below every published rating here, and the length of the rod is doing the casting rather than the load. That is why the longer rod wins for jig work, and why a dedicated crappie rod in light power is the upgrade from a combo.
Length, and what dock shooting needs
5 to 6 ft for creek arms, laydowns and anywhere with cover behind you.
6 ft 6 in to 7 ft for open water, floats and vertical jigging beside brush. This is where most crappie fishing happens and it is the length to buy if you buy one.
10 ft and up exists for long-pole and spider-rigging work. That is a specialist technique rather than a first combo, and our crappie setup page covers where it fits.
Line, and why 6 lb is the answer
Crappie live in brush. That argues for heavier line. Crappie also have paper-thin mouths and see very well in clear water, which argues for lighter line.
6 lb monofilament sits where those two arguments cross, and it is inside both combos’ published ratings. It has enough stretch to stop you tearing a hook through a soft mouth, which braid does not.
If you fish heavy brush, 10 lb braid with a fluorocarbon leader gets more jigs back, at the cost of losing more fish at the net. Our spinning line page covers the trade.
Combo or separate pieces
For crappie specifically, a combo is a better deal than usual, because the components are cheap and the matching is the hard part. A light rod paired with a 3000-size reel is nose-heavy and unpleasant, and that is exactly the mistake a first-time buyer makes.
Our combo against separates page makes the general argument, and our upgrade page covers when to stop.
So what do I actually buy?
Take the longer combo unless your water is genuinely overgrown. Then spend the difference on jigs rather than on tackle.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best crappie combo
Abu Garcia Max Elite Spinning Combo (6'10" Med-Light / 2500)
Abu Garcia
6 ft 10 in medium-light at 6-10 lb and 1/8-1/2 oz, with a 2500 reel published at 6.2:1, 9+1 bearings and 7.7 oz.
6 ft 10 in is the useful length for crappie, and it is longer than most beginner combos. Length is what lets you swing a jig under a dock without a full cast, and what picks slack line up quickly when a float goes under thirty feet away.
Medium-light power published at 1/8–1/2 oz covers the crappie jig range at the bottom and a small swimbait at the top. A medium rod rated from 1/4 oz simply will not bend enough to cast the jig most crappie anglers fish.
The reel side is unusually well published for a combo: 6.2:1, nine ball bearings plus a roller, 7.7 oz and 8 lb of line at 175 yd. Nine bearings at this price is genuinely more than the Ugly Stik combos offer, and on a reel you crank all day the smoothness is noticeable.
7.7 oz is light. Crappie fishing is a lot of repetitive casting and vertical jigging, and reel weight is the figure you feel at hour four rather than at the shop.
The drawback
A 6.2:1 retrieve is fast for crappie work, and fast retrieves make it easy to fish a jig past fish rather than through them. Abu Garcia does not publish a maximum drag figure for the combo, which on a light setup with 6 lb line is the number you would want. The fast taper is also less forgiving than a moderate one on a fish with a paper-thin mouth hooked on a single small hook.

2. Best for tight water and small jigs
Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Combo (5' Light / size 25)
Ugly Stik
5 ft light with a size 25 reel, published at 4-10 lb line, 1/8-1/2 oz lures and 8 lb of drag.
Five feet is short on purpose. A lot of crappie water is brush, laydowns and overgrown creek arms where a 7 ft rod cannot be swung at all, and accuracy under branches beats reach you cannot use.
The published 4–10 lb line rating is the practical range for crappie: 6 lb is the standard, and the top end gives you something to pull with when a jig finds the brush pile rather than the fish.
8 lb of published maximum drag is more than enough. Crappie do not run; the drag exists to protect a light line against a surprise catfish, and to stop you tearing the hook out on the lift.
The Ugly Stik blank is graphite and fiberglass rather than pure graphite, which is the right trade on a rod that lives in a boat and gets stepped on. Our blank materials page works it through.
The drawback
Five feet is too short for fishing a float at distance or for dock shooting, so it solves the opposite problem from the Max Elite rather than the same one more cheaply. Ugly Stik does not publish an action or a rod weight for the combo, and the size 25 reel's retrieve rate is not published either — so you cannot check how much line a turn actually moves.

Questions people actually ask
What size combo is best for crappie?
A 6 ft 6 in to 7 ft rod in light or medium-light power with a 1000 to 2500-size reel. Length matters more than power here, because crappie jigs are too light to load any rod properly.
What lure rating do I need for crappie jigs?
As low as you can find. A 1/16 oz jig is about 1.8 grams, and most combos publish a bottom end of 1/8 oz. Below that rating the rod length is doing the casting, not the blank loading.
What pound line for crappie?
6 lb monofilament is the standard, and it sits inside both of these combos' published ratings. It stretches enough not to tear a hook through a crappie's thin mouth, which braid will do.
Is a crappie combo worth it over buying separately?
More than in most categories. The components are inexpensive and the matching is the part beginners get wrong — a light rod on an oversized reel is nose-heavy and tiring.
