Combos
The best panfish combos, including the one to hand a child
Two different problems. One is casting a tiny jig; the other is making sure the person holding it catches something.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
For your own fishing, a 5 ft light spinning combo published at 4–10 lb and 1/8–1/2 oz. For a child or a complete beginner, the Zebco 33 spincast combo at 5 ft 6 in, published at 3.6:1 and 20 in of retrieve per turn. Panfish gear is the cheapest fishing there is and the most likely to be used.

Panfish gear is chosen for who is holding it
This is the one category where the right answer depends more on the angler than the fish. Bluegill, perch and pumpkinseed will take a bait presented by anybody.
So the question is what the person holding the rod needs. Someone who can already cast wants a light spinning combo, because the fun is in feeling a small fish on light gear. Someone who cannot wants a spincast, because the fun is in catching anything at all.
| Combo | Reel type | For |
|---|---|---|
| GX2 5 ft light | Spinning | Anyone who can already cast, and anyone who wants to feel the fish |
| Zebco 33 5 ft 6 in | Spincast | Children, complete beginners, a spare rod in the truck |
What actually catches panfish
A small jig under a float, or a worm on a hook under a float. Both combos cast both, and neither needs anything else.
The float matters more than people expect. It suspends the bait at a fixed depth, it shows the bite, and it stops a child needing to feel anything at all. Our bobbers and floats page covers sizing one so it goes under easily rather than sitting there.
Hook size is the other thing people get wrong. Panfish have small mouths, and a size 8 or 10 hook catches far more of them than a size 4. Our hooks page covers the sizing.
Where to fish it
Docks, weed edges, overhanging trees and anywhere with shade in summer. Panfish hold tight to structure and they are rarely more than a cast from the bank, which is why this is the best fishing there is for someone without a boat.
Our panfish setup page puts the whole thing together, and our pond setup page covers the water most of it happens in.
The honest upgrade path
Neither of these is a rod you keep forever, and that is fine at the price. The spincast gets outgrown in a season or two; the light spinning combo lasts longer and eventually gets replaced by a dedicated ultralight rod and a better reel.
The thing worth spending real money on first is neither — it is fresh line every season. Our spooling page covers doing it without putting twist in.
So what do I actually buy?
Light spinning if you are fishing. Spincast if someone else is, and it is their first time.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best panfish combo
Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Combo (5' Light / size 25)
Ugly Stik
5 ft light with a size 25 reel, published at 4-10 lb line, 1/8-1/2 oz lures, 5.2:1 and 8 lb of drag.
Light power at 4–10 lb is the panfish window. It bends under a hand-sized bluegill, which is most of the fun, and it still has enough backbone to lift one clear of the weeds.
Five feet is the right length for the water panfish actually live in — pond margins, creek mouths, under overhanging trees. Our panfish rods page makes the case that length, not power, is the real decision at this end of the scale.
The size 25 reel is correctly matched, which is the entire argument for buying a combo. A 2500 on a 5 ft light rod is nose-heavy and kills the feel the rod was built for.
A published 5.2:1 gear ratio is a moderate retrieve, which suits panfish: you are usually fishing slowly, and a fast reel just means more cranking with nothing on the end.
The drawback
The published 1/8 oz bottom of the lure rating is above the 1/32 and 1/16 oz jigs a lot of panfish fishing uses, so the blank is not loading on your lightest baits. Ugly Stik does not publish a rod weight or a retrieve rate for the combo. And a 5 ft rod is short for fishing a float out in open water, which is the other half of panfish fishing.

2. Best for a child or a first-ever rod
Zebco 33 Classic Spincast Rod and Reel Combo (5 ft 6 in)
Zebco
5 ft 6 in two-piece medium-light, published at 6-12 lb and 1/8-1/2 oz, with a 3.6:1 spincast reel at 20 in per turn.
A spincast reel has the spool enclosed behind a nose cone and casts with a thumb button. There is no bail to flip, no line to hold, and it is close to impossible to tangle in a way a child cannot recover from.
That is the whole argument. A beginner who spends the afternoon untangling line does not become an angler, and our spincast against spinning page is honest about where the type stops making sense.
The published 3.6:1 ratio and 20 in of retrieve per turn is slow. On a panfish combo that is a feature: a slow reel makes it hard to wind a bait past a fish, and it gives a child time to feel what is happening.
Two pieces, fiberglass, and a published 6–12 lb line rating. Fiberglass is the correct material for a rod that will be dropped, trodden on and left in a car.
The drawback
Spincast reels have small, weak drags and they collect grit inside the nose cone where you cannot see it. The 3.6:1 ratio that helps a beginner becomes a genuine limitation once they can fish, and this is a combo most people outgrow in a season or two. Medium-light power at 6-12 lb is also more rod than a bluegill needs, so it bends less and feels less alive than the light spinning set.

Questions people actually ask
What is the best combo for panfish?
A 5 ft light spinning combo if you can already cast, and a spincast combo if the rod is for a child or a complete beginner. The fish do not care; the person holding the rod does.
Is a spincast reel good for panfish?
For beginners, yes — the enclosed spool makes tangles almost impossible and there is no bail to learn. The drag is weak and the retrieve is slow, so most people outgrow one within a season or two.
What hook size for bluegill?
Size 8 or 10. Panfish have small mouths and a big hook simply does not go in, which is the most common reason a beginner gets bites and no fish.
How long should a panfish rod be?
Around 5 ft for overgrown banks and creek margins, and 6 ft 6 in to 7 ft for fishing a float in open water. Length is the real decision, because power is already near the bottom of the scale.
