The best panfish rods: light power, and the length is the choice
Power is nearly settled at this end of the scale. What you actually choose is length, and it depends on where you stand.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
A panfish rod is ultralight or light power. The Ugly Stik GX2 ultralight publishes 2–6 lb line and 1/32–1/4 oz lures; the Carbon Crappie is 7 ft light. Take the 5 ft ultralight for small water and jigs, the 7 ft light for reach and float fishing.

Power is nearly decided for you
Panfish are small. A hand-sized bluegill weighs a few ounces, a good crappie a pound or two. Nothing about that requires backbone.
Which means power sits at the bottom of the scale and the only real question is ultralight or light. Our power and action page explains why power is about the lure and line rating rather than the fish, and that is what decides it here.
| Power | Line | Lure | Use for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra Light | 2-6 lb | 1/32-1/4 oz | Tiny jigs, small spinners, bluegill |
| Light | 4-10 lb | 1/8-1/2 oz | Crappie, floats, slightly bigger baits |
| Medium | 6-15 lb | 1/8-5/8 oz | Too much rod for panfish |
Those are the published Ugly Stik figures. Notice the overlap between Light and Medium at the top of the lure range — if you already own a medium and fish 1/8 oz upward, a light rod adds less than you would expect. An ultralight adds a genuinely new capability.
Length is the actual decision
Short (4 ft 6 in to 5 ft 6 in) for creeks, overgrown banks and anywhere with cover behind you. Accuracy under branches beats distance you cannot use.
Long (6 ft 6 in to 7 ft) for open banks, docks and float fishing. Reach, line pickup, and the ability to steer a fish around the reeds at your feet.
There is a genuine third option at the extreme: rods of 10 ft and up exist for dock-shooting and long-pole crappie work. That is a specialist technique rather than a first panfish rod.
Line, and why it is the other half of the rod
A 2–6 lb rated rod wants 4 lb line, and that is not a small detail. Heavier line is thicker, and thick line on a tiny jig kills the fall that gets bitten.
Light line is also where line twist shows up worst, which our line twist page covers. On panfish gear a properly filled spool and a swivel above any spinning lure matter more than on heavier tackle.
Reel size should come down to match. A 1000 to 2500-size reel balances these rods; a 3000 on a 5 ft ultralight is a weight you fight all day.
What to fish on them
Small jigs under 1/8 oz, small inline spinners at 1/8 oz, and live bait under a float. Our crappie jigs page covers the jig end and floats the bait end.
What not to fish: anything needing a hookset through plastic, and anything over 1/4 oz on the ultralight. The rating is the limit.
The honest case for owning one
A bluegill on a medium bass rod is barely detectable. The same fish on an ultralight bends the rod to the handle.
Nothing about the fish changed — the rod is reporting the fight honestly instead of overwhelming it. For anyone fishing water that holds mostly panfish, which is most ponds and most public lakes, that is the difference between a dull afternoon and a good one.
Our complete panfish setup builds the rest of the stack around either of these rods.
So what do I actually buy?
Buy the short ultralight if your water is small and overgrown, the 7 ft light if you fish open banks and floats. Both, if panfish are your main target.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best for small water and tiny jigs
Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Rod (5 ft Ultra Light, 2-piece)
Ugly Stik
5 ft, ultra light, two-piece, published at 2-6 lb line and 1/32-1/4 oz lures.
The published lure rating is the reason to buy this rod: 1/32 oz at the bottom. A 1/16 oz panfish jig weighs about 1.8 grams, and a rod rated from 1/4 oz — roughly 7 grams — simply will not load with it, as our ultralight rods page works through.
Five feet is short deliberately. Panfish live in overgrown ponds, creek margins and places with trees behind you, and a 7 ft rod cannot be swung in most of them.
Ugly Stik publishes the same 2–6 lb and 1/32–1/4 oz ratings across its whole ultralight family, including 4 ft 6 in and 4 ft 8 in one-piece models and a 7 ft two-piece. That consistency makes it easy to pick the length without re-checking the ratings.
The drawback
The 2-6 lb rating is a hard ceiling, so a decent bass that grabs your panfish jig will either take a long time to land or break you off. Ugly Stik also does not publish a rod weight, which on a rod bought partly for how light it feels is the figure you most want.

2. Best for reach and float fishing
Ugly Stik Carbon Crappie Spinning Rod (7' Light)
Ugly Stik
7 ft light power on a carbon blank, built for the crappie and panfish end of the scale.
Seven feet of light power is a different tool from the 5 ft ultralight, and the difference is reach rather than strength.
Length does two things for panfish. It lets you swing a bait out to a dock piling or a brush edge without a full cast, and it picks line up off the water faster — which matters when a float goes under thirty feet away and you need to move a lot of slack before the hook moves.
A carbon blank at this power is genuinely more sensitive than a composite one, and panfish bites are small. On a light rod the blank material matters more than it does on a medium, because everything you are trying to feel is faint.
The drawback
Seven feet is unusable on the overgrown small water where a lot of panfish fishing happens — you cannot swing it under branches. Carbon is also less forgiving of knocks than the composite ultralight, and a light carbon blank is the easiest thing on this site to break in a car door.

Questions people actually ask
What power rod is best for panfish?
Ultra light or light. Ultra light publishes 2-6 lb line and 1/32-1/4 oz lures, which is what casts the tiny jigs panfish eat; light is 4-10 lb and 1/8-1/2 oz, which suits crappie and float fishing.
What length panfish rod should you buy?
Short, around 5 ft, for creeks and overgrown banks where you cannot swing a long rod. Long, 6 ft 6 in to 7 ft, for open banks, docks and float fishing where reach and line pickup matter.
Can you use a medium rod for panfish?
You can catch them, but you will not feel much and you cannot cast the small jigs. A medium rod rated from 1/4 oz cannot load with a 1/16 oz jig at about 1.8 grams, so the cast dies short.
What line for a panfish rod?
4 lb on an ultralight rated 2-6 lb. Heavier line is thicker, and thick line on a tiny jig kills the slow fall that actually gets bitten.
