Fishing gear for hands that tire: weight, grip and cranks per cast

Nobody writes gear guides for grip strength. Three published numbers decide most of it, and the cheapest option scores badly on one of them.

By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

Pflueger President XT Spinning Reel (30X)

The short answer

Three published figures do most of the work: reel weight, retrieve per turn, and whether the reel has a bail. A 7.7 oz reel at 30.2 in per turn asks your hand to hold less and turn it fewer times. A spincast removes the bail entirely but is the slowest thing here, so it trades one problem for another.

The three specifications that decide this

There is no gear category called “easy on the hands”, and no maker publishes a figure for it. But three published specifications between them account for most of the difference, and they are all comparable across brands.

Reel weight. You support it continuously. An ounce is nothing for a cast and noticeable across an afternoon. Published weights on this site run from 7.7 oz to 9.3 oz, which is a 20 per cent spread.

Retrieve per turn. This decides how many times you turn the handle to bring a lure back. It is published by most makers and ignored by most buyers, and the spread is much larger than the weight spread.

Whether there is a bail. A spinning reel needs the bail opened, the line trapped under a finger, and the bail closed. A spincast needs a button pressed. That is a difference in fine motor demand, not in strength.

The arithmetic on cranks per cast

A hundred casts in an afternoon is 2,800 handle turns on the fastest reel here and 4,200 on the slowest. That is a 1,400-turn difference from one published number, and it is why the cheapest and simplest option is not automatically the easiest one.

The trap: the easiest reel to cast is the hardest to wind

This is the genuine tension on this page and it is worth stating plainly.

A spincast reel removes the bail, which is the fiddliest motion in casting a spinning outfit. It is unambiguously easier to cast. But spincast reels are geared slowly, and the one here publishes 4.1:1 — so every cast costs you noticeably more winding.

Which way that trade falls depends entirely on which part you find hard. If pinching line and flipping a bail is the difficulty, take the spincast and accept the winding. If turning a handle repeatedly is the difficulty, a fast spinning reel is the better answer and the bail is a smaller price.

Things that help and cost nothing

Switch your retrieve hand. Most spinning reels and the Zebco 33 publish a reversible or left- and right-hand retrieve. Winding with your stronger hand is free, and our retrieve hand page covers how to decide.

Set the drag properly. A correctly set drag lets the reel tire a fish instead of your arms. Our drag page covers setting it against a scale rather than by feel.

Fish lighter overall. A lighter lure needs lighter line, which needs a smaller reel on a lighter rod, and the whole system gets easier together. This is why the ultralight outfit above is on the page at all.

Sit down. A shorter rod is easier to fish seated, and fishing seated removes the standing load entirely. Our bank fishing setup covers carrying less.

What this page cannot tell you

No maker publishes a grip-force figure, a handle-knob diameter, or anything else that would let you compare how a reel handle actually feels in the hand. Those are the specifications that would matter most here and they do not exist.

So everything above is built on the three figures that are published. If you can get hands on a reel before buying, do — a large knob on a slow reel may well beat a small knob on a fast one, and no spec sheet on this site can tell you that.

So what do I actually buy?

Work out which part is hard first. Fewer cranks and less weight point one way; removing the bail points the other, and the two answers are different products.

The picks, in full

Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.

1. Fewest cranks per cast

Pflueger President XT Spinning Reel (30X)

Pflueger

7.7 oz, 6.2:1 at a published 30.2 in per turn, 10 stainless bearings plus a roller, carbon body.

30.2 in per turn is the fastest published retrieve of any spinning reel on this site, and this is the specification that matters most if the winding is what tires you. A 70 ft cast is about 28 turns of the handle here against 40 on a 20 in reel.

7.7 oz is also the lightest published spinning reel weight in the registry. Reel weight is dead weight your hand supports for every minute you fish, and an ounce is more noticeable over four hours than it sounds over four seconds.

Ten stainless bearings plus a roller is what makes it turn easily under load. A rough reel takes more force per turn, and a high bearing count is the published proxy for smoothness at this price.

The body is published as carbon with a machined aluminum main gear, which is where the weight saving comes from. Our President against XT page covers what else that buys.

The drawback

It is the most expensive reel here by a clear margin, and it still has a bail arm that has to be flipped by hand on every cast — if that specific motion is the problem, a faster retrieve does not solve it. Pflueger publishes no maximum drag figure. A 6.2:1 retrieve is also genuinely too fast for slow presentations, so it is the wrong reel if you mostly fish a jig or a slow-rolled spinnerbait.

2. No bail to flip

Zebco 33 Spincast Reel

Zebco

4.1:1, 120 yd of 10 lb, all-metal gears, reversible retrieve, pre-spooled, no bail arm.

The closed face removes the bail entirely. Casting is a thumb press and a release, which is one motion instead of three, and it takes no pinch grip on the line at all.

The retrieve is published as reversible, right or left hand. Being able to wind with your stronger hand and hold the rod with the other is a real and often overlooked adjustment, and our retrieve hand page argues everyone should think about it before buying anything.

All-metal gears and a ball-bearing drive with dual ceramic pickup pins are published, which is a better internal specification than the price suggests. It arrives pre-spooled with 10 lb line.

It is also by far the cheapest thing on this page, which makes it a low-risk way to find out whether a closed face suits you before committing.

The drawback

4.1:1 is the slowest ratio on this site and Zebco publishes no retrieve-per-turn figure at all, so you cannot compare it directly — but the combo version of the same reel publishes 20 in per turn, and that is a great deal more winding per cast. If your hands tire from turning a handle rather than from flipping a bail, this is the wrong answer. No maximum drag is published, and casting light lures is limited.

3. Lightest whole outfit

Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Rod (5 ft Ultra Light, 2-piece)

Ugly Stik

5 ft ultra light, two-piece, published 2-6 lb line and 1/32-1/4 oz lures, composite blank.

The rod is half the weight you hold, and it is the half people forget. A 5 ft ultralight blank is the lightest rod in the registry, and a short rod also has a much shorter lever arm — the weight sits closer to your hand, so it takes less wrist effort to hold level.

Paired with a small reel this is the lightest complete outfit this site can put together, and for bluegill, crappie and stocked trout it is entirely adequate fishing rather than a compromise.

The published 1/32–1/4 oz lure range means you can fish small, light baits, which also means light line, a light lure and very little resistance to wind in on the retrieve. Everything in the system gets easier at once.

Two pieces makes it easier to carry and store. Our ultralight rods page covers the class.

The drawback

2-6 lb published line rating means a bass or a catfish is a long, awkward fight rather than a quick one, which is the opposite of what you want if stamina is the constraint. Five feet is short for fishing from a high bank or over vegetation. And Ugly Stik publishes no rod weight figure, so the lightness argument rests on the class rather than on a stated number.

4. Easiest complete outfit to buy

Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Combo (5' Light / size 25)

Ugly Stik

5 ft light rod with a size 25 reel, published 4-10 lb, 1/8-1/2 oz, 8 lb of drag at 5.2:1.

Matching a light rod to a small reel yourself is easy to get wrong, and a combo removes that step. This one publishes a 5 ft light rod with a size 25 reel, which is a sensible and genuinely light pairing.

8 lb of published maximum drag is more than either standalone reel on this page states, and a working drag matters more when you cannot simply muscle a fish in. Setting it properly, as our drag page describes, lets the reel do the work your hands would otherwise do.

A 4–10 lb line rating is a useful step up from the ultralight rod above. It covers panfish comfortably and survives a surprise bass, which removes the one real worry with the lightest option.

Our panfish combos page covers this outfit in its more usual context.

The drawback

It still has a bail arm, and Ugly Stik publishes neither a reel weight nor a retrieve-per-turn figure for the size 25, so two of the three specifications this page is built on are simply unavailable. A 5.2:1 ratio on a small spool is slow in absolute terms, so expect more winding than the President XT.

Questions people actually ask

What is the easiest fishing reel to use?

A spincast like the Zebco 33 is the easiest to cast, because there is no bail to flip and no line to trap under a finger. It is also the slowest to wind, at a published 4.1:1, so it trades casting ease for more handle turns.

Which spinning reel takes the fewest turns to retrieve?

Of the reels on this site, the Pflueger President XT 30X, at a published 30.2 in per turn. On a 70 ft cast that is about 28 handle turns against 42 on a reel publishing 20 in per turn.

What is the lightest spinning reel here?

The Pflueger President XT 30X at a published 7.7 oz, from a carbon body. The standard President 30X publishes 8.8 oz, so the upgrade saves over an ounce of weight you hold continuously.

Does rod weight matter as much as reel weight?

It matters more than people expect, because a rod is a lever — weight further from your hand takes more wrist effort to hold level. A short ultralight rod is both lighter and better balanced for this reason.

Can I change which hand I reel with?

Usually yes. Zebco publishes a reversible retrieve on the 33, and most spinning reels are symmetrical or offered in both hands. Winding with your stronger hand costs nothing and is worth deciding before you buy.
