The best baitcasting reels for bass: pick the retrieve rate for the lure
Gear ratio is not comparable across reels. Inches per turn is, and it is the number that matches the lure.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
The Abu Garcia Revo X LP publishes three speeds in one reel — 22, 27 and 30 in per turn — all at 7.3 oz with 7+1 bearings. The Max5 SX publishes 28 in per turn and 15 lb of drag. Slow for crankbaits, medium for everything, fast for jigs and frogs.

Why inches per turn, not gear ratio
A gear ratio tells you how many times the spool turns per handle turn. It does not tell you how much line moves, because that also depends on spool diameter and how full the spool is.
Inches per turn is the figure that is actually comparable between reels, and every reel on this page publishes it. Our gear ratio page works through the arithmetic.
| Inches per turn | Published as | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| 22 in | Revo X LP 5.4:1 | Deep crankbaits, big spinnerbaits, anything with heavy resistance |
| 27-28 in | Revo X LP 6.7:1, Max5 SX and X 6.8:1 | The all-round speed: squarebills, bladed jigs, Texas rigs, jerkbaits |
| 30 in | Revo X LP 7.3:1 | Jigs, frogs, flipping and punching — anything needing fast slack pickup |
If you own one baitcaster, it belongs in the middle band. If you own three, buy one from each.
What the brake actually does
A baitcaster overruns because the spool keeps spinning after the lure has slowed. Every reel here publishes MagTrax magnetic braking, which applies resistance in proportion to spool speed — hardest at the start of the cast, backing off as the spool slows.
That is the forgiving system, and it is why these are reasonable reels to learn on. Our backlash page covers setting spool tension and brake together, which is the part that actually stops overruns.
The rod and line that go with it
A 7 ft medium-heavy casting rod is the standard bass partner, and our bass rods page covers the ratings. If this is a first baitcaster, our baitcasting rods for beginners page covers what changes against a spinning rod.
For line, 12 lb monofilament while you are learning — it stretches, it forgives, and it comes out of a backlash. Move to fluorocarbon for clear water and braid for frogs and heavy cover once overruns are rare.
Where a baitcaster is the wrong tool
Below about 1/4 oz. A light lure cannot overcome the spool’s inertia, so it casts badly and backlashes easily. That is a physics limit rather than a skill limit, and it is why finesse bass fishing still happens on spinning gear.
Our spinning against baitcasting page covers the split properly, and our bass spinning reels page covers the other half of a complete bass setup.
So what do I actually buy?
One reel, in the middle speed band. If you are building a second rod, buy a slow one for cranks or a fast one for jigs rather than a duplicate.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best bass baitcaster
Abu Garcia Revo X LP Casting Reel
Abu Garcia
Three published ratios — 5.4:1, 6.7:1 and 7.3:1 at 22, 27 and 30 in per turn — all at 7.3 oz with 7+1 bearings.
One reel published in three speeds is what makes this the bass answer rather than a general one. Bass fishing is a set of techniques that want different retrieve rates, and buying the same reel three times in three ratios gives you identical handling across every rod.
The published 22 in per turn version is genuinely slow, and slow is hard to find. A deep crankbait like our crankbaits page covers has to be worked at a speed that lets the bill dig, and a fast reel makes fishing one properly nearly impossible.
At the other end, 30 in per turn is what a jig or a frog needs: when a fish eats and swims at you through cover, the hookset does not start until the slack is gone.
7.3 oz published across every model and a C6 carbon frame is light for this price bracket, and the 7+1 stainless bearing count is above the Max5 X. Line capacity is published at 135 yd of 10 lb, which is more than any bass fight needs and enough to re-tie all season.
Left and right-hand versions are published for each ratio, which matters more than it sounds — the reel you can crank without swapping hands is the one you fish.
The drawback
Abu Garcia does not publish a maximum drag figure anywhere in this specification table, which on a reel bought for pulling bass out of cover is precisely the number you want. A C6 carbon frame is lighter than aluminum and flexes more under heavy drag. And the three-speed lineup is only an advantage if you buy more than one — for a single reel it is just three similar options to choose between.

2. Best all-round single reel
Abu Garcia Max5 SX Casting Reel
Abu Garcia
6.8:1 at 28 in per turn, 15 lb of published Power Disk drag, 7+1 bearings and 7.2 oz.
28 in per turn is the middle of the bass range, and if you own one baitcaster this is where it should sit. It is fast enough for a bladed jig and a Texas rig, slow enough not to ruin a squarebill.
The published 15 lb maximum drag is the figure the Revo does not give you, and on a bass reel it is the one worth having. 15 lb is well beyond anything a largemouth applies; what matters is that the number is stated at all.
Duragear brass gearing and a Power Disk drag are published rather than described. Brass gears are what keep a reel feeling smooth into a second season, and this is the least glamorous specification on the page.
At 7.2 oz it is the lightest reel here by a tenth of an ounce, which is a rounding error, and it holds the same 130 yd of 12 lb. Our baitcasters under $150 page compares it directly against its own cheaper sibling.
The drawback
A graphite frame and sideplates rather than aluminum, so it flexes more under load than a metal-framed reel. One ratio only — if you want a slow crankbait reel or a fast flipping reel you have to buy a different model rather than the same reel in another speed. And 15 lb of drag is plenty for bass and marginal if you hook something larger on braid.

3. Best budget bass baitcaster
Abu Garcia Max5 X Casting Reel
Abu Garcia
Identical published 6.8:1, 28 in per turn, 15 lb drag and 7.2 oz, with 5+1 bearings instead of 7+1.
Every figure that matters is the same as the SX: 6.8:1, 28 in per turn, 15 lb of drag, 7.2 oz, 130 yd of 12 lb, MagTrax braking. Two fewer bearings is the entire published difference.
That difference shows at the start of a cast with a light lure, and effectively nowhere else. If most of what you throw is 1/2 oz and up — which describes most bass fishing — you will struggle to find it.
Which makes this the reel to buy when the goal is two rods rigged rather than one nicer reel. Having a jig rod and a crankbait rod both ready saves more fishing time than two bearings ever will.
The drawback
Two fewer spool bearings is a real difference on light lures, and light lures are exactly where beginners backlash. Same graphite frame as the SX. And because the published figures are otherwise identical, the argument for spending more on the SX rests on a feel difference you cannot check from a spec sheet.

Questions people actually ask
What gear ratio baitcaster is best for bass?
Compare inches per turn instead. Around 27 to 28 in is the all-round band, 22 in suits deep crankbaits and 30 in suits jigs, frogs and flipping where you have to pick up slack fast.
How many baitcasting reels do I need for bass?
One in the middle speed band covers everything acceptably. Three — slow, medium and fast — is the point of buying a reel published in multiple ratios, so handling stays identical across rods.
Can I fish light lures on a baitcaster?
Below about 1/4 oz, not well. The lure cannot overcome the spool's inertia, so it casts short and backlashes easily. That is why finesse bass fishing still happens on spinning gear.
Is a magnetic brake better for a beginner?
Yes. Magnetic braking applies resistance in proportion to spool speed, so it works hardest at the start of the cast where overruns happen and eases off as the spool slows.
