Rods
The best trout rods for spinning gear
Not every trout angler fly fishes. On spinning gear the rod is short, light, and rated for lures most rods cannot cast.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
A trout spinning rod is ultralight or light power, and short on streams. The Ugly Stik GX2 ultralight publishes 2–6 lb line and 1/32–1/4 oz lures. Take 5 ft for small streams with cover behind you, 6 ft 6 in to 7 ft for lakes and open rivers.

Spinning for trout, not fly fishing
Trout are strongly associated with fly gear, and our fly section covers that discipline properly. This page is about the other way, which catches a great many trout and asks much less of you.
Spinning gear for trout has two clear advantages. It casts a long way with very little skill, and it fishes deep water easily — both things fly gear struggles with.
It gives up delicacy. A fly setup can present something weightless on a fine leader in a way no spinning rod can, and in very clear, heavily fished water that matters.
Length is set by the water
| Water | Length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small overgrown stream | 4 ft 6 in - 5 ft | Accuracy under branches; you cannot swing longer |
| Open river | 6 ft - 6 ft 6 in | Line control across current seams |
| Lake or reservoir | 6 ft 6 in - 7 ft | Casting distance to fish holding out |
| Float fishing | 7 ft or longer | Picks slack line up off the water faster |
Power barely changes across that table — it is ultralight or light throughout. Length does all the work, which is unusual and makes the choice simpler than it looks.
What to fish on a trout spinning rod
Inline spinners. The most effective single trout lure on spinning gear. A 1/8 oz spinner swung across a current seam is close to unbeatable, and our spinner page covers the technique.
Small spoons. A 1/4 oz spoon casts further than a spinner of the same weight and fishes deeper, which our spoons page explains.
Small suspending baits. In cold water a small jerkbait paused in front of a trout is highly effective for the reasons our jerkbait page sets out.
Bait under a float. Simple, effective and the best way to start.
Our trout lures page puts numbers to all of these.
The swivel is not optional
Trout fishing on spinning gear means spinners and spoons, and both rotate. Both put twist into the line, and light line shows twist worse than anything else.
A small barrel swivel eighteen inches above the lure fixes it entirely. Skipping it is the most common self-inflicted problem in trout spinning, and our line twist page explains why.
Approach matters more than the rod
Trout in clear shallow water see you before you see them. Everything our pond page says about approach applies double here.
Stay low, stay back from the bank, fish upstream where you can so the fish are facing away, and keep your shadow off the water. On a small stream, approach is most of the skill and the rod is just the tool that delivers the lure.
Our complete trout setup builds the full stack, and our trout reels page covers the reel end.
So what do I actually buy?
Buy for your water. A 5 ft rod on a lake and a 7 ft rod on a small stream are both frustrating for opposite reasons.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best stream trout rod
Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Rod (5 ft Ultra Light, 2-piece)
Ugly Stik
5 ft ultra light, published at 2-6 lb line and 1/32-1/4 oz lures.
The published 1/32 oz floor is what makes this a trout rod. Small inline spinners at 1/8 oz and small spoons sit comfortably mid-range, and a 1/16 oz jig is still castable.
Five feet is the right length for a stream and not a compromise. Stream trout fishing happens in tunnels of alder and willow, casting under branches at targets ten yards away. A 7 ft rod cannot be swung there at all.
The composite blank is a real advantage on stream gear specifically, because a stream rod gets knocked against rock, dragged through brush and occasionally sat on. Glass content survives that in a way a light carbon blank does not.
The drawback
Five feet costs you real distance on a lake, where trout often sit further out than you can reach. The 2-6 lb rating also means a big lake-run fish will test the whole system, and Ugly Stik does not publish a rod weight.

2. Best lake and river trout rod
Ugly Stik Carbon Crappie Spinning Rod (7' Light)
Ugly Stik
7 ft light power on a carbon blank — reach and sensitivity for open water.
Seven feet of light power is the open-water trout rod. Nominally a crappie rod, the specification is the same thing trout fishing wants: light power, long, sensitive.
Length buys distance, and on a lake distance matters. Stocked trout in a reservoir often hold beyond a 5 ft rod’s comfortable range, and the extra two feet is the cheapest casting distance available.
It also suits float fishing for trout, which is a genuinely effective and underrated approach — a bait suspended at a known depth, with our slip float setup doing the depth control.
The drawback
It is the wrong rod for a small stream, where it simply will not fit between the trees. The carbon blank is also the more fragile of the two, which is a real consideration on a rod you carry through brush to reach water.

Questions people actually ask
What rod is best for trout fishing with spinning gear?
Ultralight or light power throughout, with length set by the water: 5 ft for small overgrown streams, 6 ft 6 in to 7 ft for lakes and open rivers where casting distance matters.
Do you need a special rod for trout?
You need one rated for the lures, which most rods are not. Small spinners and spoons sit at 1/8 to 1/4 oz, and a medium rod rated from 1/4 oz will not load properly with them.
Why do you need a swivel for trout fishing?
Because spinners and spoons both rotate, and light trout line shows the resulting twist worse than any other line. A small barrel swivel eighteen inches above the lure fixes it completely.
Is spinning gear as good as fly fishing for trout?
For distance and depth it is better, and it needs far less skill to cast. What it gives up is delicacy — a fly setup can present something almost weightless on a fine leader in a way no spinning rod can.
