The best bass lures for summer: they are deep, shaded, or feeding at dawn
Hot water pushes bass into three places, and no single lure reaches all of them. This is the smallest set that does.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
Summer bass are deep, under heavy cover, or feeding in low light. Cover all three with a deep crankbait published to 15 ft, a hollow-body frog, a walking topwater and a weightless stick worm. The mistake is fishing the middle of the day in the middle of the water column, which is where they are not.

What summer actually changes
Warm water holds less oxygen and bass are less willing to chase in it. They respond by moving to places where at least one condition is better: deeper water that stays cooler, thick vegetation that shades and oxygenates, or the cooler hours at either end of the day.
That is why the four lures above look unrelated. They are not four ways to catch a bass; they are one lure each for the three places bass go and one for when they will not move at all.

The time of day matters more than the lure
This is the least popular advice in summer bass fishing and the most reliable.
A competent angler fishing the first hour of light will out-fish an expert at two in the afternoon, on the same water with the same lures. If you can only fish the middle of the day, go deep or go into the thickest cover you can find — those are the two places where bass are still catchable in bright sun.
Night fishing is the other answer on heavily pressured water, though none of the lures here is a specifically nocturnal choice.
Go bigger than you think in low light
The Zara Spook is 4.5 in and 3/4 oz. That is a big lure by the standards of anything else on this site.
In low light a bass finds a topwater by silhouette and by disturbance, and a bigger bait gives it more of both. It also casts further, which matters when you are covering a flat at first light and want to keep the boat away from the fish.
The same logic does not hold in bright sun, where a smaller, quieter presentation is usually better. Our lure color page covers the clarity half of the same question.
The one that is not like the others
Three of these lures cover water. The stick worm does not, and buying it for the wrong reason is the commonest mistake with it.
A weightless Senko is a lure for a specific piece of cover you can see: a dock, a shade line, a single laydown. You put it in that place, let it fall, and if nothing eats it you move to the next place. Fishing it blindly across open water wastes an afternoon.
That makes it the summer bait for bank anglers in particular, who are fishing a limited stretch of water thoroughly rather than covering acres. Our bank fishing setup assumes exactly that approach.
What to leave at home
Shallow squarebills and spinnerbaits are spring and autumn lures. They work in summer at dawn and then stop working, and a box full of them is why people say summer fishing is hard.
The seasonal pages on this site are deliberately different from each other for this reason — our spring page and fall page both lead with lures that have no place in this list.
So what do I actually buy?
Buy for the three places summer bass go. If your budget is one lure, make it the stick worm — it catches fish in the shade all summer and needs no special rod.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best for deep summer fish
Strike King Pro Model 5XD Crankbait
Strike King
2.5 in, 5/8 oz, published 15 ft running depth from an extra-deep bill.
15 ft published is the number that makes this the summer bait. When the surface is warm, a large share of the bass in a lake move to deeper structure and stay there through the middle of the day, and most tackle boxes simply cannot reach them.
Strike King publishes it as diving 4–5 ft deeper than the Series 5, which is a useful way to think about buying crankbaits: the bill is the specification, and everything else is color.
5/8 oz at 2.5 in needs a rod with some backbone to cast and to drive hooks at that depth. Our technique matrix covers the crankbait rod case, and a moderate action matters more here than anywhere else.
Use a fish finder to locate the structure first. Casting a deep crankbait at random water is slow, and our reading guide covers finding the ledge before you start.
The drawback
It is hard work. A deep crankbait pulls all day and tires your arm and your reel, and it is the lure most likely to make you wish you had bought a lower gear ratio. It fouls on bottom cover at depth, where retrieving it is difficult, and at 15 ft you cannot see what you snagged. Strike King publishes no hook size.

2. Best for heavy cover
Booyah Pad Crasher Hollow-Body Frog
Booyah
2.5 in at 1/2 oz, or 2 in at 1/4 oz, hollow body with a published flat walking belly and a drain hole.
Summer is when vegetation is thickest, and a hollow-body frog is the only thing you can fish across the top of it. The hooks sit tight against the body until a bass compresses it, so it comes through pads and mats that would stop any treble-hooked lure.
The flat bass-boat belly is published, and it is what lets the frog walk side to side rather than just slide. A frog worked in a rhythm across a mat draws fish up through the vegetation.
The published drain hole matters more than it sounds. A hollow frog takes on water through the hook slots, and a frog full of water casts badly and sits too low.
Two published sizes: 2.5 in at 1/2 oz and 2 in at 1/4 oz. The smaller one is the answer on pressured water or when fish are short-striking.
The drawback
The hookup rate is genuinely poor and there is no way around it — you will have bass blow up on a frog and not be hooked, repeatedly, and it is the most frustrating fishing there is. It needs heavy line and a rod with real power, so it is not a lure you can fish on a general-purpose setup. Booyah publishes no hook size.

3. Best for dawn and dusk
Heddon Zara Spook Walking Bait
Heddon
4.5 in, 3/4 oz, walking topwater, 11 published colors.
Summer bass feed hardest in low light, and a walking bait covers water fast across the surface while they are up. The first hour of daylight is the single most productive hour of a summer day on most lakes.
4.5 in and 3/4 oz is a big bait, and that is deliberate. It casts a very long way, it is visible from a distance in low light, and it selects for larger fish — small bass generally will not commit to it.
“Walking the dog” is a rhythm rather than a retrieve: slack line and a repeated wrist twitch make it glide side to side. It takes an evening to learn and works for the rest of your life.
Our topwater page covers the three actions and when each one is right; this is the searching one.
The drawback
3/4 oz on exposed trebles is heavy, and a thrashing bass with two trebles in its mouth throws hooks regularly. It only really works in low light and flat conditions — in bright sun at midday it is close to useless, which is most of a summer day. Heddon publishes one size on this product page, so there is no smaller option for pressured fish.

4. Best when nothing else works
Gary Yamamoto Senko
Gary Yamamoto
3 to 7 in offered, 10 per pack at 3-5 in, heavily salt impregnated, published horizontal weightless fall.
The published signature action is a horizontal fall with a side-to-side shimmy, weightless. That slow fall is the presentation summer bass in shade will eat when they will not chase anything.
Heavy salt impregnation is published, and it is what makes the bait dense enough to cast with no weight at all. That is the whole design: the lure is its own sinker, so it falls level rather than nose-down.
Summer puts bass under docks, under overhanging trees and against any shade they can find. A weightless stick worm skipped under a dock is the highest-percentage summer presentation there is, and our rigging page covers the Texas and weightless options.
Five published lengths from 3 to 7 in. The 5 in is the standard; drop to 4 on pressured water. Our wacky rig page covers the other way to hook it.
The drawback
It is slow fishing. A weightless fall in 8 ft of water takes a long time, and covering water with it is not realistic — this is a lure for places, not for searching. Salt-impregnated plastic also tears easily, so expect to get a few fish per bait rather than a few dozen. Gary Yamamoto publishes no hook size recommendation on the product page.

Questions people actually ask
What lures work best for bass in summer?
A deep crankbait for fish on structure, a hollow-body frog for heavy vegetation, a walking topwater for dawn and dusk, and a weightless stick worm for bass holding in shade. Summer splits fish into those three places.
Why is summer bass fishing so hard?
Warm water holds less oxygen and bass are less willing to chase, so they go deep, bury in cover, or feed only in low light. Fishing the middle of the water column in the middle of the day is why most people struggle.
How deep are bass in summer?
Often deeper than a typical tackle box reaches. A crankbait published to 15 ft, like the Pro Model 5XD, exists for exactly this, and finding the structure with a fish finder first makes it far more efficient.
What time of day is best for summer bass?
The first hour of light and the last hour before dark. In bright sun, go to the deepest structure or the thickest cover you can find, which are the two places bass stay catchable.
Do frogs really catch bass through thick weeds?
Yes — the hooks sit against the hollow body until a bass compresses it, so it comes across mats nothing else can fish. The trade is a genuinely poor hookup rate, which is inherent to the design.
