The best bass lures for fall: find the bait and the bass are under it
In fall you are not looking for bass. You are looking for bait, and the bass are already there.
By Sawyer V. · Last updated · How we pick

The short answer
A spinnerbait for shallow bait balls, published in 3/8 and 1/2 oz; a deep crankbait published at 2.5 in, 5/8 oz and 15 ft; and a paddle-tail swimbait published from 2.8 to 7.8 in. All three imitate shad, because in fall almost everything a bass eats is a shad.

The fall pattern, in one sentence
As water cools, shad move out of the main lake and into creek arms, and bass follow them. Find the bait and you have found the fish.
That is genuinely most of fall bass fishing. Look for surface flickers, for birds working, or for bait balls on your fish finder. Then fish a shad-shaped lure through it.
| When | Fish are | Lure |
|---|---|---|
| Early fall | Back in creek arms, shallow, chasing bait | Spinnerbait, fished fast |
| Mid fall | Creek channel edges and secondary points | Swimbait on a jig head, at whatever depth |
| Late fall | Main-lake points and deeper structure | Deep crankbait at 15 ft |
Why everything is silver
Because the forage is shad, and a shad is silver. Fall is the one season where matching the hatch is not a fly-fishing idea — a lure the same size and color as the bait in the water outfishes a brighter one most days.
The exception is dirty water after rain, where a chartreuse or white bait gets found when a natural one does not. Our lure color page covers the visibility argument properly.
Size, and the mistake people make
Fall bass feeding on a bait ball are eating a specific size of shad, and they will ignore something much bigger. Early fall shad are small — often under 3 in.
Which is why the eight published swimbait sizes matter more than they look. Start small, match what you see flickering on the surface, and go up only if the fish are clearly hunting bigger bait.
Fall against spring
Spring fishing is about phases and temperature thresholds. Fall fishing is about location and following bait, and it is far less structured.
The practical difference: in spring you decide what to throw by taking the water temperature. In fall you decide by finding the bait first and then choosing the lure that reaches its depth.
Our spring bass lures page covers the other half of the year, and our bass setup page covers the tackle for both.
One more thing that works in fall
Topwater. When bass are pushing bait to the surface in a creek arm, a walking bait fished through the commotion is as good as anything on this page and considerably more fun.
Our topwater page covers the baits, and the same find-the-bait rule applies.
So what do I actually buy?
A spinnerbait for shallow, a swimbait for anything in between, and a deep crankbait for late fall. All in shad colors.

The picks, in full
Every card below lists the specs we could read off a published page, the URL they came from, and one honest reason you might not want it.
1. Best fall bass lure
Strike King Burner Spinnerbait
Strike King
Published in 3/8 and 1/2 oz with double willow Raz-R-Blades and a compact minnow-shaped head.
Double willow blades are published, and willow blades are the shad-imitating blade shape: narrow, fast-spinning, and flashing like a fleeing baitfish rather than thumping like a Colorado blade.
The published thin-cut Raz-R-Blade design is built to spin at high RPM, which is the point of a bait called a Burner. In fall you want to fish fast, because the fish are actively chasing and speed triggers a reaction.
A compact minnow-shaped head with reduced drag is published, and that is what lets you retrieve it quickly without it rolling over or blowing out of the water.
Fish it on wind-blown banks and around visible bait activity. Our spinnerbaits page covers blade shapes in full.
The drawback
Strike King publishes the hook as Gamakatsu but not the size, so you cannot check it against your line. A fast-retrieve spinnerbait is also a shallow-water tool — once fall fish pull out to deeper structure it stops covering the right water. And only two published weights means no option for very shallow or very deep presentations.

2. Best for fish on deeper structure
Strike King Pro Model 5XD Crankbait
Strike King
2.5 in, 5/8 oz, published diving to 15 ft on an extra-deep bill, 4-5 ft deeper than the Series 5.
The published 15 ft running depth is the reason this bait is on a fall page. As water cools through late fall, bait and bass slide out of the shallow creek arms and stage on the first deeper structure they find.
Published as diving 4–5 ft deeper than the Series 5 with the same body — that comparison is what tells you the bill is doing the work, not the size. A small bait at a deep depth is exactly what a shad-feeding fall bass wants.
At 2.5 in and 5/8 oz it matches a shad and still casts a long way, and distance matters on a deep crankbait: the bait needs run-up to reach its depth and it only fishes properly in the middle of the retrieve.
Fish it on a moderate-action rod and a slow reel. Our bass baitcasters page covers why 22 in per turn exists.
The drawback
A deep crankbait is physically hard work — pulling a big bill through 15 ft of water all day is the most tiring retrieve in bass fishing, and it is worse on a fast reel. Three treble hooks make it a genuine snag risk on rocky points, and Strike King does not publish the hook size. It is also useless in the shallow creeks where early-fall fish actually are.

3. Best for matching the bait size exactly
Keitech Swing Impact FAT Swimbait
Keitech
Eight published sizes from 2.8 to 7.8 in, dual-injection molded from two salted plastics with a thickened paddle tail.
Eight published sizes is the argument. Fall bass are keyed on a specific size of shad, and the difference between a 2.8 in and a 3.8 in swimbait on a given day is frequently the difference between fish and no fish.
Dual-injection molding from two salted plastics is published: a softer belly and a firmer back, which lets the tail kick at low speeds while the body holds the hook. That low-speed action matters late in fall when the water is cold.
A thickened paddle tail is published, and the thicker the paddle the more water it moves and the slower it can be fished before the action dies.
Rigged on a jig head it covers any depth you like, which is the flexibility the other two baits do not have. Our swimbaits page and jig heads page cover the rigging.
The drawback
Keitech does not publish a pack quantity, which makes the per-bait cost impossible to work out before you buy — and these are among the more expensive soft plastics. Soft baits also tear, so the running cost is real. And the published squid scent is absent from the French Pearl color, which the maker states rather than hides but which is easy to buy by accident.

Questions people actually ask
What is the best bass lure in the fall?
Something shad-shaped, fished where the bait is. A spinnerbait for shallow creek arms early in fall, a paddle-tail swimbait for the middle depths, and a deep crankbait once fish move to main-lake points.
Where do bass go in the fall?
They follow shad out of the main lake and into creek arms as the water cools, then back out to deeper structure late in the season. Find the bait — surface flickers, birds, or bait balls on sonar — and the bass are with it.
What color lures for fall bass?
Shad patterns: silver, white and translucent. Fall forage is almost entirely shad. The exception is dirty water after rain, where chartreuse or solid white gets found when a natural color does not.
Why are my fall bass ignoring big lures?
Almost certainly size. Fall bass key on a specific size of shad and early-season shad are often under 3 in. Match what you can see flickering on the surface before you change pattern or color.
